A method for refining a titanium metal containing ore such as rutile or ilmenite or mixtures to produce titanium ingots or titanium alloys and compounds of titanium involves production of titanium tetrachloride by processing the ore with a chlorinating procedure and removing various impurities by a distillation or similar procedures to form a relatively pure titanium tetrachloride. Thereafter, the titanium tetrachloride is introduced continuously into a reactor at the focal point of a plasma under atmospheric pressures of inert gas along with molten metallic reductant for the initial reduction of gas phase titanium tetrachloride into molten titanium drops which are collected in a set of skulled crucibles. Thereafter, further processing is carried out at atmospheric pressures in under inert gas where the titanium is heated by plasma guns to maximize titanium purity and, in a final optional stage, alloying compounds are added under the same controlled environment and high temperature conditions.

Low cost high speed titanium and its alloy production

An improved nuclear shielding material that is flexible so as to effectively fill voids in radiation containment structures. Under very high temperatures the material is designed to undergo pyrolysis and transform into a strong ceramic material. The material contains a number of components, the first of which is a polymeric elastomer matrix such as a two part self-polymerizing system like RTF silicone rubber. Additional components include: a compound to shield gamma radiation like tungsten carbide powder, a neutron absorbing/gamma blocking compound such as boron carbide powder, a heat conducting material such as diamond powder, a high temperature resistant compound such as silicon dioxide powder, a second neutron absorbing compound which also imparts electrical conductivity, namely barium sulfate powder, and a hydrogen gas surpassing component which readily absorbs hydrogen such as sponge palladium.

Flexible amorphous composition for high level radiation and environmental protection

A method for refining a titanium metal containing ore such as rutile or illmenite or mixtures to produce titanium ingots or titanium alloys and compounds of titanium involves production of titanium tetrachloride as a molten slag, by processing the ore in a chlorination procedure and removing various impurities by a distillation or other procedure to form a relatively pure titanium tetrachloride (TiCl.sub.4). Thereafter, the titanium tetrachloride is introduced into the plasma focal point of a plasma reactor in a molten sodium environment for the initial reduction of gas phase titanium into titanium molten drops which are collected by a set of skulls. Thereafter, further processing are carried out in higher vacuum and the titanium is heated by electron beam guns in order to maximize titanium purity and, in a final optional stage, alloying compounds are added under yet higher vacuum and high temperature conditions.

A process is described for the diffusion or metallizing of one electrically conductive metallic material into and on to the matrix of a second electrically conductive metallic material. The process will occur when the second material is in a solid state condition and placed in closely spaced but not touching contact with the first conductive material, and both are subjected to an applied D.C. potential across the materials while the first metallic material is subjected to an ultrasound signal. The first material and the second material thus form an electrode pair. The material of the second metallic element is then deposited on the first and the first metallic material is effectively metallized by the second material. The material to be coated is moved, e.g., rotated, during the process while maintaining a small gap with respect to the other electrode. Also disclosed is a relatively simple apparatus for carrying out the method of this invention. Such apparatus basically includes an ultrasonic generator, a workpiece holder, mounting attachments for mounting the material to be coated on the ultrasonic horn, a D.C. and A.C voltage supply and a device to effect movement and rotation of the workpiece relative to the horn.

Electro mechanical process and apparatus for metal deposition

A method for refining metal slag containing TiO.sub.2 to produce titanium compound comprising introducing molten slag into a heat vacuum chamber, whereby the heat and vacuum oxidize the slag. The slag is skimmed or further reacted by application of heat and vacuum to remove additional impurities.

Stanchions are supported vertically aligned and each carries a vertically adjustable clamp which carries two rollers which support the weight of a rotisserie spit. One clamp has a bracket which supports a clockwork motor. The motor is connected to the spit by a universal joint to compensate for non-parallel alignment of stanchions or non-level clamps. The motor has a rotatable first spool having a winding key, a pawl to permit winding, a shaft connected to the universal joint, and the first gear of a train. A second spool is rotatably mounted in the motor. A constant torque Negator spring is fixed to the first spool and is unwound therefrom onto the second spool. At the end of the train is a pinion having triangular teeth. A reciprocable escapement plate is driven by the end pinion to control the first spool shaft for constant speed, constant torque rotation of the spit.
