In some implementations, a mobile computing device may participate in the calibration of an output signal of a media device. This calibration process includes storing device-specific calibration data which is related to properties of a light sensor of the mobile device. The mobile device then detects of properties of light emitted by the display device during a presentation to obtain sensor values related to light emitted by the display device during the presentation. The calibration process may also ensure that the mobile device is proximate to the display device prior to obtaining the sensor values. The collected sensor values are adjusted using device-specific calibration data stored to the mobile device to normalize the sensor values relative to a baseline. These normalized sensor values are sent to the media device for use in adjusting the output signal based on the normalized sensor values.

Adjusting signal settings for a display using a light sensor

A system may include multiple electronic devices. A first device such as a source electronic device may supply visual content for displaying by a display in a second electronic device such as a display electronic device. The display electronic device may be a television or other device with a display. Calibration operations may be performed by taking light measurements on light produced by the display when test content is provided from the first device to the second device. A third electronic device in the system such as a portable electronic device with an ambient light sensor may make measurement on the light from the display while the test content is being displayed. The test content may contain a test image target with time-varying color and time-varying intensity, allowing calibration information such as gamma curves to be obtained on the display.

Display calibration system

Aspects of the subject technology relate to display circuitry for displaying both standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR) content with an HDR display. The subject technology provides a headroom-based transfer function that maintains the contrast of the SDR content whether the display is operated in the SDR or HDR mode.

Standard and high dynamic range display systems and methods for high dynamic range displays

An electronic device may include display layers such as liquid crystal display layers and a backlight unit that provides illumination for the display layers. The backlight unit may include light-emitting diodes that emit light into the edge of a light guide film. To minimize the inactive area of the display, the light-emitting diodes may be tightly spaced to approximate a line light source instead of point light sources. Color and/or luminance compensation layers may be incorporated at various locations within the backlight structures to ensure that the backlight provided to the display layers is homogenous. A thin-film transistor layer of the display may be coupled to a printed circuit board by a flexible printed circuit. The flexible printed circuit may have additional solder mask layers to improve robustness, may include encapsulation, and may have traces with a varying pitch.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices with displays and ambient light sensors. An electronic device modifies the color of images to be displayed based on measured ambient light color. The modification is performed in a perceptually uniform color space and includes a determination of a bleaching effect of reflected ambient light, and a determination of a color correction factor to be applied within the perceptually uniform color space, based on the determined bleaching effect. The modification may also include an application of a strength factor that mitigates out-of-gamut colors in color compensated images.

Ambient light color compensation systems and methods for electronic device displays

An electronic device has a display with a pixel array overlapping an array of temperature sensors. Control circuitry in the device may gather temperature measurements from the temperature sensor array. The control circuitry may apply a global offset to the temperature measurements and may apply a damping factor to the globally offset measurements to produce a two-dimensional temperature profile for the display. A look-up table or other data structure may be used to store information on pixel color correction gain values as a function of temperature. This temperature-gain information and temperature information from the two-dimensional temperature profile may be used by display circuitry in the device to display color-corrected images on the display.

Electronic devices with temperature-compensated displays

An electronic device may be provided with a display having a backlight with light sources of different colors. The electronic device may include a color ambient light sensor that measures the color of ambient light and control circuitry that adjusts the color of light emitted from the backlight based on the color of ambient light. The light sources may include at least first and second light-emitting diodes that emit light having different color temperatures. The control circuitry may adjust the intensity of light emitted from the first light-emitting diode relative to the intensity of light emitted from the second light-emitting diode to produce a backlight color that more closely matches the color of ambient light. The first and second light-emitting diodes may include an ultraviolet light-emitting diode die and a blue light-emitting diode die that are mounted in a common semiconductor package.

Display with ambient-adaptive backlight color

An electronic device may generate content that is to be displayed on a display. The display may have an array of pixels each of which includes subpixels of different colors. The content that is to be displayed on the display may include an object such as a black object that is moved across a background. Due to differences in subpixel values in the background for subpixels of different colors, there is a potential for color motion blur to develop along a trailing edge portion of the object as the object is moved across the background. The electronic device may have a blur abatement image processor that processes the content to reduce color motion blur. The blur abatement image processor may identify which pixels are located in the trailing edge and may adjust subpixel values for pixels in the trailing edge.

Systems, methods, and non-transitory media are presented that provide for improving color accuracy. An electronic display includes a display region having multiple pixels each having multiple subpixels. The electronic device also includes a display pipeline coupled to the electronic display. The display pipeline is configured to receive image data and perform white point compensation on the image data to compensate for a current drop in the display to cause the display to display a target white point when displaying white. The display pipeline also is configured to correct white point overcompensation on the image data to reduce possible oversaturation of non-white pixels using the white point compensation. Finally, the display pipeline is configured to output the compensated and corrected image data to the electronic display to facilitate displaying the compensated and corrected image data on the display region.

Electronic display color accuracy compensation

A layer of liquid crystal material may be interposed between display layers. The display layers may include thin-film transistor circuitry having subpixel electrodes for applying electric fields to subpixel portions of the layer of liquid crystal material. Subpixels of different colors may have different shapes and may have different liquid crystal layer thicknesses. These subpixel differences may be configured to slow the switching speed of subpixels of a certain color relative to other subpixels to reduce color motion blur when an object is moved across a black or colored background. The subpixels may have chevron shapes. Subpixels of a first color may have chevron shapes that are less bent than subpixels of second and third colors. In configurations with varying liquid crystal layer thicknesses, the subpixels of the first color may have thicker liquid crystal layers than the subpixels of the second and third colors.
