A method and composition for non-destructive testing of magnetizable workpieces such as steel billets. A dry dispersion of ferromagnetic particles in combination with a fluorescent pigment and a water soluble carrier are deposited on the workpiece which is simultaneously or thereafter magnetized. The magnetizable particles are attracted to surface imperfections by the action of the magnetic field and become clustered therein to form indications. The indications are fixed more firmly to the piece by applying an aqueous spray, consisting either of a water mist or steam which activates the water soluble carrier so that upon drying, the indications remain firmly attached to the workpiece. Subsequent examination of the workpiece under ultraviolet irradiation enables the inspector to determine the extent and the location of the flaws.

Method and composition for detecting flaws in a workpiece utilizing either white light or ultraviolet light wherein a penetrant solution is applied to the surface of the workpiece, the penetrant solution containing a rhodamine dye dissolved in a solvent, the dye possessing an inherent color and being capable of fluorescing under the influence of ultraviolet light. The excess penetrant is removed from the surface in accordance with usual practice, while leaving penetrant entrapped in any surface flaws. An improved developer is applied to the surface, the developer consisting of a suspension including a finely divided developer powder suspended in the same dye solvent as in the penetrant in a sufficient amount to lower the concentration of rhodamine dye in the entrapped penetrant below that at which quenching of fluorescence occurs. The indications thus produced under both visible light and ultraviolet light are distinct and non-blurring, enabling the piece to be inspected under either type of light source.

A method for testing a magnetizable workpiece for flaws by the magnetic particle inspection method wherein a coating of finely divided, hydrophobic particles is electrostatically applied onto the surface of a workpiece to be tested after which an aqueous suspension of magnetizable particles is applied over the resulting coating. The magnetized workpiece is then inspected for deposits of magnetizable particles which have become lodged in the flaws. The hydrophobic nature of the coating repels the water from the suspension, and permits the indications to appear promptly after application of the magnetizable particle suspension.

A method for non-destructive testing for flaws on the surface of a workpiece which includes the step of applying a penetrant composition including a fluorescent dye in a liquid vehicle onto the surface to permit the penetrant to become trapped in the flaws and then removing excess penetrant from the surface while leaving penetrant entrapped in such flaws. A remover is then applied to the surface, the remover composition including a solvent, at least one surface active agent which serves as an emulsifier for the liquid vehicle of entrapped penetrant, and a fluorescent material which is more readily soluble in the liquid vehicle of the penetrant than it is in the solvent. Upon contact of the entrapped penetrant with the remover, the fluorescent material from the remover is preferentially absorbed in the penetrant vehicle entrapped in the flaws thereby enhancing the fluorescent indication provided by the entrapped penetrant. The indications are developed in the usual way by applying a developer to the surface to draw the entrapped penetrant to the surface of the workpiece where it is contrastingly visible to the surface and is observable by viewing the surface under ultraviolet light.
