An apparatus for making molded articles of plastic material, in particular molded films of thermoplastic flakes, by using a slush molding process, includes a mold container having at least one interior space for receiving plastic material and a mold wall which can be heated and cooled in alternating sequence. The mold container is located within a support frame which is rotatable about a rotation axis, whereby the suspension of the mold container is so configured as to allow a movement of the mold container in three degrees of freedom. The suspension includes a combined swivel and shift arrangement, which is disposed between the support frame and the mold container and supports the mold container in such a manner as to effect a rotation of the mold container about a pivot axis, which is perpendicular to the rotation axis, and a reciprocating motion in the direction of the pivot axis.

A mixing head for a mold can receive two or more reactive synthetic resin components in a mixing chamber in which a mixing-chamber piston is displaceable to drive the residues into a first calming chamber communicating with the outlet of the mixing chamber. The first calming chamber also has a piston or plunger which can be advanced to drive the residues into a second calming chamber connected to the outlet of the first calming chamber. The second calming chamber has a second piston displacing the mixture into the mold cavity. Because the pistons of the first and second calming chambers can be retracted as the mixture flows through these chambers, a highly effective calming effect can be obtained for the turbulent mixture of the mixing chamber without throttling.

Apparatus for mixing reactive synthetic-resin components

Through three separate passages opening in a common plane at right angles to one another into a mixing chamber, three components of a reactant polyurethane or polyurea elastomer composition to form in a mold cavity are introduced. One of the components is an aliphatic polyether amine having primary amino function and substantially free from free hydroxyl groups, catalysts with tertiary amino groups, carbon dioxide as a carbamate reactive with the polyether amine and optionally other inert gases and conventional polyurea additives. The second component is a polyisocyanate or prepolymer thereof and the third component C is water. The reacting mixture is formed through a throttle gap into the mold to form low-density foamed products under low fuming conditions and has no unreacted diisocyanates.

Apparatus for producing a foamed mass of a polyurea elastomer

A mixing device exhibiting a mixing chamber, feed and recirculation lines for components and for the component mixture. A control piston reciprocates inside the mixing chamber between a recirculation position where the feed and recirculation lines are in fluid communication and a mixing position where the components impinge and mix in the mixing chamber. At least one component has a straight line recirculation path from its feed to return line through a radial slot in the control piston. A bypass line branches off from at least one feed line and opens into the mixing chamber at a mixing input duct in the same radial plane as a mixing input duct for a second component.

An impingement mixing device is provided comprising a mixing chamber housing, a control piston axially displaceable within said mixing chamber housing between an extended position and a retracted position, a mixture chamber within the housing defined by an end face of the control piston when in the retracted position and a mixing chamber discharge outlet coextensive with an end face of said control piston when in the extracted position, means to feed first and second components to the mixing chamber in opposing relationship, a discharge tube housing defining a quieting chamber having an opening at a discharge end and in fluid communication with the mixing chamber, with said discharge tube housing including a sealing means adapted to at least partially close the opening of the quieting chamber at the discharge end.

Impingement mixing apparatus

An apparatus for reflow smoothing a molded article made by first heating a face of a mold at a first station, then applying a fusible synthetic resin to the heated face and thereby melting the resin into a continuous coating covering the heated mold face at a second station spaced angularly from the first station, and cooling the coating and mold at the second station until the coating hardens. To reflow smooth the article, the surface of the cooled coating is then smoothed by confining the mold and hardened coating in a substantially closed chamber at the second station and reheating the confined coating until its surface flows. Thereafter the coating is cooled again at a third station angularly spaced from and downstream of the second station until it hardens and the hardened covering is stripped from the mold at a fourth station angularly spaced downstream of the third station and upstream of the first station.

Apparatus for molding an article from a fusible synthetic resin

An impingement mixing device is provided comprising a mixing chamber housing, a control piston axially displaceable with said mixing chamber housing between an extended position and a retracted position, a mixing chamber within the housing defined by an end face of the control piston when in the retracted position and a mixing chamber discharge outlet coextensive with an end face of said control piston when in the extended position, means to feed first and second components to the mixing chamber in opposing relationship, a discharge tube housing defining a quieting chamber having an opening at a discharge end and in fluid communication with the mixing chamber, with said discharge tube housing including a sealing means adapted to at least partially close the opening of the quieting chamber at the discharge end.

Mixing apparatus

An impingement mixing device for preparation of plastic parts or objects including cellular foam from at least two reactive synthetic components and an auxiliary component such as liquid foaming agent and including at least two injection ports and a third port for input of the auxiliary component. Inert gas optionally and a foaming agent and further additives are mixed at a point in the cylindrical wall of the component mixing chamber located in or near the vicinity of the radial plane passing through the component openings. The introduction of the inert gas, foaming agent, coloring agent, or further additives is controlled by a cleaning piston which also simultaneously cleans the mixed plastic material penetrated therein from the opening area of the inert gas feeder line. The cleaning piston is part of a control piston, which with its rear segment is located in a metering chamber for the inert gas and optionally also for the foaming agent and the additives. The transition between the rear segment of the control piston and its front segment forming the cleaning piston is in the form of a conical valve seat.

A mixing head for two reactive components, e.g. the components of a settable synthetic resin mixture, comprises a mixing chamber in which a plunger is shiftable to block and unblock the nozzle orifices and drive the reaction mixture from the chamber through an outlet. At least one of the nozzles is carried on a readily shifting slider which cooperates with a similarly shiftable obturating member to define a small premixing chamber, as desired, and deflect the mixture through at least 90.degree. within the mixing chamber. This system is especially effective for the mixing of reactive components which have hitherto been found to be difficult to mix with conventional mixing heads.

Mixing head

A mixing head for two or more reactive components especially anionically polymerizing caprolactam comprises a piston formed with recess means which, at the end turn toward the outlet of the mixing chamber, intercept respective streams of the components which are normally trained upon one another and thus prevent mixing just before the piston blocks the ports through which these streams are directed into the mixing chamber.

A mixing head for mixtures of reactive components, e.g. two-component synthetic-resin systems to be discharged into a mold, in which the orifices for the two components open into a mixing chamber and can be selectively blocked or unblocked by a plunger or piston which serves to drive the mixture out of the chamber. According to the invention a blocking body (baffle barrier) is provided on a connecting rod which extends through the plunger and, in a retracted position of the latter, is located in the path of the jets of the reactive components emanating from the orifices.
