A method and a system of calibrating a scanner that has a scanning element. The method includes scanning data with the scanning element, and determining an intermediate value of the scanned data. The method also includes determining a variation value of the scanning element, and determining a data freedom value based on the intermediate value and the variation value.

A method for generating a tonal response curve for a scanner includes (a) directing light from the scanner to a calibration target having a single uniform neutral tone; (b) measuring with the scanner an amount of incident light reflected from the calibration target to obtain a simulated optical density value associated with the calibration target and the amount of incident light; (c) changing the amount of the incident light; (d) repeating acts (b) and (c) until a predetermined number of simulated optical density values are accumulated; and (e) generating the tonal response curve for the scanner by matching each of the simulated optical density values with one of a plurality of reference optical densities.

A method for compensating for a contaminated calibration target used in calibrating a scanner having a plurality of sensor pixels includes (a) scanning a calibration target to generate a respective plurality of calibration data samples for each sensor pixel of the plurality of sensor pixels; (b) for calibration data samples associated with a current sensor pixel of the plurality of sensor pixels, removing any calibration data sample that corresponds to a region of calibration target contamination, leaving filtered calibration data samples; (c) determining a gain value for the current sensor pixel based on the filtered calibration data samples; (d) repeating acts (b) and (c) for a next sensor pixel until a respective gain value is determined for each of the plurality of sensor pixels; and (e) applying the determined gain values to the plurality of sensor pixels for use in subsequent image scanning by the scanner.

Method for compensating for a contaminated calibration target used in calibrating a scanner

Methods for establishing or configuring imaging device settings use the luminance and chrominance values of an original document. The document is identified as either a text document or a photograph based at least in part on the luminance values of the document's pixels, and identified as black and white or color document based at least in part on the chrominance values of the document's pixels. The settings of the imaging device may then be based at least in part on whether the document is a text or photograph, or black and white or color.

Methods of identifying the type of a document to be scanned

An image sensor has two or three rows of imaging elements, all the imaging elements being of the same size. This provides the rows with a native resolution. The image sensor is also provided with three shift registers. First and second shift register elements receive information from respective corresponding imaging element in a first and second row of imagining elements while shift register elements of the third shift register receive information from four imaging elements. The four imaging elements form a super-pixel, allowing the sensor to output information in a low resolution mode, as well a native and a high resolution mode.

A gauge for detecting the level of ink in a printer's ink reservoir includes: a transmitter antenna adapted to be positioned adjacent to an outer surface of a printer's ink reservoir; a transmitter circuit operatively coupled to the transmitter antenna for generating a radio-frequency signal for transmission by the transmitter antenna; a receiver antenna; a receiver circuit for obtaining at least a portion of the radio-frequency signal received by the receiver antenna; and a processing circuit, operatively coupled to the receiver circuit, and configured to determine an approximate level of ink in the ink reservoir based upon, at least in part, a characteristic of the obtained portion of the radio-frequency signal, such as a voltage level of the obtained portion of the radio-frequency signal.
