Described are optical recording media for recording data in voxels, the optical recording media including a plurality of data recording regions for recording the voxels, the data recording regions separated by buffer regions having optical properties such that illumination from a reader that enters one of the data recording regions remains preferentially confined in said one of the data recording regions until being scattered by interaction with one or more of the voxels. Also described are methods for reading the described optical recording media, which include separating the light received from illuminating the voxels based on wavelength, polarization, or other optical properties.

An active metasurface that provides low-loss and high-bandwidth modulation control of light includes a number of cells arranged on a substrate. A controller dynamically alters a voltage differential supplied to the electrodes of each of the cells is adapted to alter refractive index of each of the high-index dielectric blocks in order to controllably steer light exiting the cell.

A metasurface includes a plurality of Bragg mirrors, each having a defect cavity therein, arrayed in a grid. A heat source is provided for each of the plurality of Bragg mirrors. A waveguide grating antenna apparatus includes a substrate layer, an asymmetric waveguide array layer upon the substrate layer, and a waveguide grating array layer formed above the asymmetric waveguide array layer. The waveguide array layer is composed of two forms of waveguide structures arranged in parallel. Each waveguide of the first form extends continuously, has a first width, and is laterally separated from each adjacent waveguide of the first form by a gap distance. Each waveguide of the second form extends parallel to and between adjacent waveguides of the first form within the first gap distance and is narrower than each of the first width and the gap distance. Pairs of the second form are closer to lateral sides of a first alternating set of the first form. The waveguide grating is composed of adjacent, separated elements extending axially along each waveguide of the first form.

Implementations described and claimed herein provide a high-capacity, high-bandwidth scalable storage device. The scalable storage device includes a layer stack including at least one memory layer and at least one optical control layer positioned adjacent to the memory layer. The memory layer includes a plurality of memory cells and the optical control layer is adapted to receive optically-encoded read/write signals and to effect read and write operations to the plurality of memory cells through an electrical interface.

An active metasurface includes a number of periodically-repeated unit cells arranged on a substrate that each include a plasmonic waveguide shaped and sized to provide a cutoff mode that captures light of a target wavelength. The active metasurface includes an index modulation controller that controllably varies a voltage differential across each one of the periodically-repeated cells to change a phase of light incident on the metasurface.

Apparatus and method for transferring data in a data storage system, such as but not limited to a hard disc drive (HDD). An optical link is provided between an analog front end (AFE) of a data storage device controller circuit (SOC) and a preamplifier/driver circuit (preamp) mounted to a rotary actuator to transfer an analog domain signal. A selected component is extracted from the signal using a modulation element such as a micro-resonance ring (MRR) or a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Modulation (MZM) device. The extracted component is forwarded to a processing circuit to facilitate a transfer of data between a local memory and a non-volatile memory (NVM). The optical link includes a flexible portion in a flex circuit affixed to the rotary actuator and which supports the preamp. Multiplexed read, write, and power control signals are concurrently transmitted via the optical link. The link can concurrently service multiple head-disc assemblies (HDAs).

An optical isolator has a first optical property with respect to transmitted components of the light traveling towards a target and a second optical property with respect to reflected components of the light traveling towards the laser. The second optical property suppresses the reflected components of the light. The optical isolator can be used in applications such as heat-assisted magnetic recording and LIDAR.

3D optical data storage refers to forms of optical data storage in which information can be recorded and/or read with 3D resolution. 3D optical media are generally limited in areal density by the diffraction limit of laser light used to read and/or write data to and/or from the optical media. It is thus advantageous to find ways to store data on 3D optical media with a spot size below the diffraction limit of an associated laser reader to further increase areal density of the optical media. A hybrid approach that utilizes plasmon technology to access a surface layer of the 3D optical media with an extremely small spot size and photon technology to access interior layers of the 3D optical media with a larger spot size may substantially increase overall data density of the 3D optical media.
