A static transfer switch is provided for supplying power to a load alternately from two different power sources. Preferably, switching between the two power sources occurs within one electrical cycle. In order to control inrush currents and reduce disruption during power transfers between the two power sources, switches are provided to configure which input phases are connected to the output phases.

Technologies for transferring a load by a static transfer switch (STS) to a catcher uninterruptible power supply (UPS) are disclosed. In an illustrative embodiment, each STS in a catcher UPS system monitors an available power of the catcher UPS. The STS determines, in response to a power failure event of an associated UPS, whether a real-time power supplied to a load connected to the STS exceeds the available power of the catcher UPS and whether the STS has priority over each other STS in the system. The STS transfers the load from the associated UPS to the catcher UPS in response to determining that the real-time power supplied to the load does not exceed the available power of the catcher UPS and that the STS has priority over each other STS in the system.

Technologies for static transfer switch load transfer for catcher uninterruptible power supply systems

A static transfer switch assembly includes a first digital signal processor circuit associated with a preferred power source to detect a power quality event at the preferred power source, and a second digital signal processor circuit associated with an alternate power source to detect a power quality event at the alternate power source. A third digital signal processor circuit is in communication with each of the first and second digital signal processors and with a transfer switch. The third digital signal processor circuit computes and balances flux in real time based on sample voltages received from each of the preferred and alternate power sources, and controls the transfer switch to transfer the load from one of the power sources to the other power source, based on one of the first or second digital signal processor circuits detecting a power quality event.

An apparatus and method that can accelerate the turn off time for a thyristor current interrupter. Following commutation of a load current from a main thyristor to an auxiliary turn-off unit, a capacitor of the auxiliary turn-off unit can provide a resonant current to create a zero current crossing for turning the main thyristor off, as well as provide a reverse bias voltage for the main thyristor. The auxiliary turn-off unit can hold the main thyristor off and facilitate sufficient time being available for main thyristor to block forward system voltage. A voltage level of another capacitor of the auxiliary turn-off unit can, with a switch of the auxiliary turn-off unit and the main thyristor turned off, be increased to a level that triggers at least one voltage-clamping unit to absorb electrical power from that capacitor. The load current passing in the auxiliary turn-off unit can be decreased as the electrical power is absorbed to a level at which one or more auxiliary thyristor switches of the auxiliary turn-off unit can be turned off.

A static transfer switch is provided for supplying power to a load alternately from two different power sources. Switching between the two power sources may occur within a fraction of one electrical cycle. In response to sensing degraded performance in the power source supplying the load, a gate signal is turned off to a first switch coupled between the power source and the load. A third switch coupled between an energy storage and the first switch is also closed to release a current to the input or output of the first switch The current forces a drop in current conducted through the first switch and causes the first switch to open and stop conducting current. A second switch coupled between the alternate power source and the load is then closed to supply power to the load from the alternate power source.

Technologies for interactive predictive control of uninterruptible power supply systems are disclosed. In an illustrative embodiment, a method of controlling a double-conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system may include defining, with a digital signal processor (DSP), a curve as a function of a plurality of user-input reference points associated with an inductor coupled to either an input or an output of the double-conversion UPS system, where the curve is indicative of an electromagnetic behavior of the inductor. The method may also include determining, with the DSP, in response to an application of current to the inductor, an inductance value for the inductor based on the defined curve and the applied current. The method may further include setting, with the DSP, as a function of the determined inductance value, a duty cycle to control switching of at least one of an active rectifier and an inverter of the double-conversion UPS system.

Technologies for interactive predictive control of uninterruptible power supply systems

A resonant turn-off circuit is provided to disconnect an inadequate power source and transfer a load to an alternate power source. In the circuit, a main switch is turned off before the AC cycle of the power source crosses zero. As a result, the main switch may be turned off quickly to transfer electric power supplied to a load to a second power source. The circuit may include resonant switches, a capacitor, a pre-charging power supply and an inductor. When it is desired to turn off the main switch, a resonant switch is turned off to cause a voltage reversal across the switch.

A switching assembly includes a first terminal and a second terminal, a first switch connected to the first terminal, and a second switch connected to the second terminal. The switching assembly further includes a rectifier bridge connected between the first switch and the second switch, and a third switch connected between the first terminal and the second terminal. The switching assembly also includes a control unit that selectively opens and closes the first switch, the second switch and the third switch, and selectively turns on and off the rectifier bridge.
