A display device including a surface for viewing an image comprising a stack of layers configured to display the image. A processor is configured to include switchable detection modes. Each mode is preconfigured to detect an object on or near the surface based on a given sensitivity to light, and has a different sensitivity than other of the modes.

A display device including a surface for viewing an image comprising a stack of layers configured to display the image and a first and second set of light sensitive elements included in the stack. The first set of light sensitive elements is configured to provide a first data set corresponding to an object on or near the surface based on a first sensitivity to light. The second set of light sensitive elements is configured to provide a second data set corresponding to the object on or near the surface based on a second sensitivity to light. One of the first and the second data sets is selected and a location of the object on or near the surface is determined based on the selected data set.

A flame simulating apparatus () includes a transparent electronic display device () for displaying images of flickering flames. The electronic display () may be positioned in front of at least a portion of a simulated fuel bed () or other fireplace objects, so that the simulated fuel bed () or other fireplace object is visible through the display device (). A backlight () may be spaced apart from the display device () to accommodate a portion of the simulated fuel bed () between the display device () and the backlight () to generate depth perception.
