Example technologies described herein relate to spatial audio on wearable playback devices, such as headphone and earbuds. Such technologies may include forms of binaural rendering of audio, which is played back on the wearable playback devices. These technologies may create or enhance an immersive listening experience which, to the listener, does not sound like you are listening on a wearable device, but are instead listening to a well-tuned, well-place, three-dimensional audio system of loudspeakers in a particular listening environment, such as the listener's actual living room.

Example techniques relate to audio playback device calibration. Example playback devices described herein may utilize one or more techniques for calibration, which may be implemented as various calibration procedures. In some implementations, the example media playback system may support multiple types of calibration, perhaps with different calibration procedures being used for different types of playback devices (e.g., with different capabilities) or in different situations (e.g., with or without user involvement).

Calibration of audio playback devices

Example techniques described herein relate to calibration of a playback device. Using example techniques, a playback device may self-calibrate by measuring a self-response and using a transfer function to map the self-response to an estimate of a room response. The playback device may determine calibration settings to at least partially offset acoustic characteristics of an environment surrounding the playback device as represented in the estimated room response. The transfer function may be derived from a principal component analysis of a dataset including multiple room responses, perhaps as measured during a multi-point calibration process of the playback device in various environments and conditions.

Examples described herein relate to calibration of audio playback devices in a media playback system using inputs derived from a multi-channel adaptive filter of an acoustic echo canceller. Example playback devices described herein may utilize one or more techniques for calibration, which may be implemented as various calibration procedures. In some implementations, an example playback device may implement a self-calibration procedure, which involves the playback device calibrating (or re-calibrating) itself during operation. Yet further, the playback device may estimate acoustic impulse responses from a multi-channel adaptive filter of an acoustic echo canceller to use as inputs to the self-calibration procedure.

Systems and methods for mapping noise via a plurality of playback devices within an environment are disclosed herein. In one example, a plurality of playback devices can each output audio and also detect sound within the environment to obtain respective sound data specimens. For each playback device, the respective sound data specimen can be analyzed to obtain a respective noise determination. A spatial map of the noise determinations within the environment can then be constructed. A visual representation of the spatial map can further be presented to a user. In response to the noise determinations and/or a user input, the audio output via at least one of the playback devices can be modified, for example to mask or suppress noise within one or more regions of the environment.

Mapping and characterizing acoustic events within an environment via audio playback devices

Embodiments disclosed herein include playback devices configured to operate in one or more playback configurations including configurations individual playback devices play back one or more corresponding channels of multichannel audio content. An audio parameter can be determined based on a distance between playback devices. In some examples, the audio parameter comprises a filter such as a low frequency filter that varies based on at least the distance between the playback devices. After the audio parameter is determined, the playback devices can play back audio content according to the determined audio parameter.
