A system and method for determining a lateral and vertical path for aircraft guidance from a current aircraft position to a landing runway following a complete loss of engine thrust includes determining, in a processing system, a final approach segment, a deceleration segment, and a driftdown segment. Connecting, in the processing system, the driftdown segment to the deceleration segment, and the deceleration segment to the final approach segment, to form a complete lateral and vertical path from the current aircraft position to the landing runway. And rendering, on a display device, a graphical representation of the complete lateral and vertical path from the current aircraft position to the landing runway, wherein the graphical representation of the complete lateral and vertical path updates as the aircraft travels.

Systems and methods for displaying position sensitive datalink messages on avionics displays are provided. In one embodiment, a flight deck instrument display system for an aircraft comprises: a flight plan display screen that displays a graphical representation of at least a part of an aircraft's planned flight path together with symbology representing a position of the aircraft with respect to the aircraft's planned flight path; wherein the flight plan display screen further displays at least one symbol positioned along the graphical representation of at least a part of the aircraft's planned flight path that indicates a point of applicability for a received uplink datalink message.

Systems and methods for displaying position sensitive datalink messages on avionics displays

The present invention provides a set of holding pattern entry algorithms used to define flight segments for entry into holding patterns. These geometries preferably describe the specific location and distance of various segments used in the holding pattern and holding pattern racetrack, with each segment defined as a curved or straight segment between endpoints. The algorithms also preferably include criteria used to determine entry extension, maximum initial turn angle, and minimum distance between a hold fix and an entry turn point. The geometry also preferably extends entry distance to avoid excessive iterative calculations. The algorithms are preferably utilized by a flight management system and method that determines segment sequencing during entry into holding patterns and the holding patterns themselves. The flight management system and method monitors the aircraft's progress along the active segment of the flight plan to determine what is the appropriate next segment in the algorithm and when to switch control from the active segment to the next segment.
