A current transformer (CT) for the purpose of, for example, current measurement, that uses a power line as a first coil and a second coil for measurement purposes, is further equipped with a third coil. Circuitry connected to the third coil is adapted to measure a signal therefrom. The measured signal from the third coil is compared to a signal measured from the second coil and based on the results, internal CT parameters are determined allowing calibration of actual results to expected results thereby providing an improved accuracy. This is especially desirable when using the CT for measurement of the like of current or phase of the primary coil when measurements are adjusted using the newly determined calibration parameters.

Self calibration by double signal sampling

A current transformer (CT) for the purpose of, for example, current measurement, that uses a power line as a first coil and a second coil for measurement purposes, is further equipped with a third coil. Circuitry connected to the third coil is adapted to inject a known reference signal to the third coil of the CT. The injected reference signal, i.e., current, generates signals in the first and second coils of the CT. The signal generated in the second coil is compared using circuitry attached thereto to the reference signal. Based on the results, and the difference between the expected results and the actual results, updated calibration parameters are determined. These provide improved accuracy when using the CT, for example for measurement of the like of current or phase of the primary coil when measurements are adjusted using the newly determined calibration parameters.

Self calibration by signal injection

A system and method for detection of a fault in a component of an Alternate Current Motor (ACM) based on current samples of the ACM. The system includes a current sensor for sampling a current of the ACM. The sampling is performed a plurality of times within a half-wave form of an Alternate Current (AC) of the ACM and over several cycles of half-waves. The system also includes a computing device for receiving the plurality of current samples. The computing device is configured to analyze a plurality of current samples of the AC of the ACM, the plurality of current samples taken for at least several periods of half-waves of the AC, determine, based on the analysis of the plurality of current samples, whether the ACM is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) or a non-VFD, and report that fault detection cannot be made if the ACM is a VFD.

A system and method for the wireless synchronization of a self-powered power sensor (SPPS) to a central controller for calculating a value of an electrical parameter. The method includes receiving from a central controller a message that includes timing information of the central controller time base; sampling at least an electrical signal respective of a powerline connected to an SPPS; estimating from the samples of the at least an electrical signal at least a first electrical parameter, where the at least a first electrical parameter is adjusted using the timing information; generating a packet; appending to the packet the estimated at least a first electrical parameter; and transmitting the packet to the central controller.

System and method for timing synchronization of a self-powered power sensor

A system and method for the synchronization of a central controller wirelessly for determining values of electrical parameters. The method includes sampling an electrical signal via at least one self-powered power sensor (SPPS); estimating, via the at least one SPPS, a time-stamp based on the sampled electrical signal; estimating, via the at least one SPPS, at least a first electrical parameter; generating a preamble of a packet; generating a synchronization information for a synchronization field of the packet; transmitting the packet components wirelessly; determining a time offset value for the packet based on the time-stamp and the transmission time-stamp of the synchronization information; and transmitting the time offset value by appending the time offset value to the packet, wherein the time offset value is used for determining at least a second electrical parameter.

Timing synchronization of self-powered power sensors and a central controller collecting samples therefrom

An apparatus and method for identification of air leaks in a compressed air system are presented. The method includes receiving system data including current samples of air compressors of the compressed air system from at least one self-powered power sensor; aggregating the system data; dividing the aggregated system data into a plurality of clusters; merging overlapping clusters to reduce the number of clusters to two clusters, wherein a first cluster represents a baseload current and a second cluster represents a full-load current; determining the baseload current to full-load current ratio and comparing the ratio to a predetermined standard; and determining if an air leak is present if the ratio is below the predetermined standard.

System and method for transmission of time stamps of current samples sampled by a self-powered power sensor

A system comprises of a plurality of current consumption monitors, such as self-powered power sensors (SPPSs) that collect information from energy consuming equipment. The monitors check periodically the current consumed by the equipment and the results are stored in memory. Periodically the data collected is processed respective of each monitor to determine the ratio between the total number of cycles, i.e., the number of times an equipment consumed energy, to the number of cycles in which the equipment consumed energy for a period of time that is shorter than a predetermined threshold of time. Upon detection of a change in the ratio over a period of time an alert is provided. In one embodiment the equipment may be caused to shut down responsive of an appropriate alert.

System and methods thereof for monitoring of energy consumption cycles

A method is provided for handling the heating resulting from the operation of a self-powered power sensor (SPPS). The SPPS periodically switches between a sense mode and a harvest mode, each contributing to power dissipation that translates into heat, which may become a safety hazard. A duty cycle that is the ratio between the period in which sensing take place and the total time elapsed between sensing periods defines the duty cycle of the SPPS. In order to prevent overheating of the SPPS it is configured to provide a dynamic duty cycle that is higher for lower currents in the primary power wire and lower, for higher primary currents. This allows for better power dissipation of the SPPS and removing it from operation in unfavorable or dangerous conditions.

Thermal management of self-powered power sensors

A self-powered power sensor (SPPS) measures electrical parameter measurements at points of interest, such as circuit breakers, machines, and the like. The SPPS which comprises of components that may require corrections, such as the errors induced by, but not limited to, the use of a split core mounted around a current carrier, and hence calibration coefficients are provided based on test, measurements and/or calculations respective of the devices. These coefficients may be stored in a database for retrieval when calibration of measurements received from a measuring device. In one embodiment at least one of the calibration coefficients is stored on SPPS.

Each SPPS is enabled to communicate its respective data, in an environment of a plurality of such apparatuses, to a management unit which may further process the data sent thereto, as well as communicate back to the SPPS for the purpose of synchronization of, for example, clocks of the SPPS and the management unit.
