Disclosed are compositions comprising crosslinked hyaluronic acid gels, preferably vinyl sulfone cross-linked hyaluronic acid known as hylan B gel, for use in topical cosmetic and dermatological formulations. The hylan B gel in these formulations provides prolonged delivery of incorporated substances to the surface of the skin, to provide a hydrated film on the surface of the skin, and to provide a substantive and compatible film on the skin.

Composition using cross-linked hyaluronic acid for topical cosmetic and therapeutic applications

Disclosed are highly resilient and cohesive gels formed by the cross-linking of hyaluronan or hylan, their salts or derivatives thereof, using divinyl sulfone (DVS) as the cross-linking agent. Also disclosed are viscoelastic fluids containing alkylsulfone groups covalently attached to the backbone of the polymer, formed by the mono-functionalization of the cross-linking monomer DVS with hyaluronan and/or hylan. Mechanical properties such as values of hardness and cohesiveness are specified by the rheological properties of the gels. Also disclosed are methods for the preparation of such products. They have use in many applications as injectable and/or implantable devices and as drug delivery systems.

Polymeric materials, their preparation and use

Disclosed are hydrophilic polymers such as polysaccharides, including hyaluronic acid of any origin, modified by reaction with epoxy-functional-silicones. Hydrophobic silicon, which contains chemically active groups covalently attach to the backbone of the hydrophilic polymer and gives these new, modified polymers the ability to dissolve hydrophobic compounds including oils, drugs, and vitamins, while maintaining the hydrophilic properties and benefits of the unmodified polymer. With respect to topical applications these polymers substantially increase the stability of formulations and provide for ease of preparation. The properties and advantages of the original polymer are maintained while other properties are augmented, namely the ability to combine with or dissolve hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs. The products can be used alone or in combination with other substances for various applications including cosmetic, medical, and drug delivery applications. Also disclosed are methods for preparing them.

Modified hydrophilic polymers containing hydrophobic groups

The present invention provides for compositions of hyaluronic acid cross-linked with at least one other hydrophobic polymer to form a copolymer gel. The preferred composition is a formulation containing hyaluronic acid or its derivatives and a silicone base polymer with a functional group capable of reacting with the preferred cross-linker. The silicon may also be a group capable of undergoing further polymerization, or a silicone moiety adding to the hydrophobic nature of the gel. The product can be used alone or contain various other substances or covalently bound substances for numerous useful applications including cosmetic, medical, and drug delivery applications. The present invention also provides processes for preparing them.
