Example embodiments relate to methods and systems for using interference to detect sensor impairment. Radar or another type of sensor on a vehicle may receive radio-frequency (RF) signals propagating in the environment. These RF signals may originate from an external source and a computing device can be used to determine a distance and an angle to the source in order to identify a power level threshold that represents an expected power associated with the RF signals. The computing device may then perform a comparison between a power level of the RF signals and a power level threshold. Based on the comparison, the computing device may decrease a confidence assigned to the radar coupled to the vehicle and control the vehicle based on the decreased confidence assigned to the radar.

Methods and systems for using interference to detect sensor impairment

Example embodiments relate to corrugated radomes for protecting and concealing components of radar units. An example radar system may include a radar unit that includes at least one antenna having a radiation pattern. The radar unit is configured to transmit a radar signal based on the radiation pattern and receive radar signals. In addition, the radar system further includes a radome located in a direction of transmission of the radiation pattern. Particularly, the radome includes a stepped surface having at least one step that includes a height equal to one-quarter of a wavelength at a frequency of operation of the radar unit. The least one step is positioned on the radome such that the at least one step causes deconstructive interference of reflections of the transmitted radar signal caused by the radome.

Corrugated radomes

The technology employs a contrasting color scheme on different surfaces for sensor housing assemblies mounted on exterior parts of a vehicle that is configured to operate in an autonomous driving mode. Lighter and darker colors may be chosen on different surfaces according to a thermal budget for a given sensor housing assembly, due to the different types of sensors arranged along particular surfaces, or to provide color contrast for different regions of the assembly. For instance, differing colors such as black/white or blue/white, and different finishes such as matte or glossy, may be selected to enhance certain attributes or to minimize issues associated with a sensor housing assembly.

Self-driving sensor system

A radar system in an autonomous vehicle may be operated in various modes and with various configurations. In one example, the radar system determines a target range for further interrogation. The target range may be determined based on the radar system transmitting a first electromagnetic radiation signal and receiving a first reflected electromagnetic signal radiation signal. After the radar system determines a target range, it transmits a second electromagnetic radiation signal. Additionally, the radar system receives a reflected electromagnetic signal radiation based on the transmission. After receiving the reflected signal, the radar system can process the reflected signal to only have components associated with the target range. The processing of the reflected signal may create a processed signal. Finally, the radar system may determine at least one parameter of a target object based on the processed signal.

Adaptive algorithms for interrogating the viewable scene of an automotive radar

A radar system includes a split-block assembly unit comprising a first portion and second portion, where the first portion and the second portion form a seam. The radar system further includes a plurality of ports located on a bottom side of the second portion opposite the seam. Additionally, the radar system includes a plurality of radiating elements located on a top side of the first portion opposite the seam. The plurality of radiating elements is arranged in a plurality of arrays. The plurality of arrays includes a set of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission arrays, a set of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) transmission arrays, and at least one reception array. Further, the radar system includes a set of waveguides configured to couple each array to a port.

Integrated MIMO and SAR radar antenna architecture

The radar system includes a split-block assembly comprising a first portion and a second portion. The first portion and the second portion form a seam, where the first portion has a top side opposite the seam and the second portion has a bottom side opposite the seam. The system includes at least one port located on a bottom side of the second portion. Additionally, the system includes radiating elements located on the top side of the first portion, wherein the radiating elements are arranged in a plurality of arrays. Yet further, the system includes a set of waveguides in the split-block assembly configured to couple each array to at least one port. Furthermore, the split-block assembly is made from a polymer and where at least the set of waveguides, the at least one port, and the plurality of radiating elements include metal on a surface of the polymer.

Plated, injection molded, automotive radar waveguide antenna

The present application discloses embodiments that relate to an electromagnetic apparatus. In one aspect, the present apparatus includes a circuit board configured to propagate an electromagnetic signal. The apparatus also includes a waveguide configured to propagate an electromagnetic signal. The apparatus further includes a coupling port configured to couple a signal between the circuit board and the waveguide, where the coupling port has dimensions based on a desired impedance of the port.

Example embodiments relate to slanted radomes for protecting radar units. An example radar system may include a radar unit that includes at least one antenna having a radiation pattern. The radar unit is configured to transmit a radar signal based on the radiation pattern and receive radar signals. In addition, the radar system further includes a radome located in a direction of transmission of the radiation pattern. Particularly, the radome is aligned at an angle relative to a plane of the at least one antenna such that reflections of the transmitted radar signal caused by the radome are directed towards at least one of a null of the radiation pattern and an absorption component.

The present application discloses embodiments that relate to an electromagnetic apparatus. In one aspect, the present apparatus includes a circuit board configured to propagate an electromagnetic signal, a waveguide configured to propagate an electromagnetic signal, and a coupling port configured to couple the electromagnetic signal between the circuit board and the waveguide. The apparatus further includes a radiating structure disposed on the circuit board. The radiating structure includes an electric field coupling component configured to an electric field between the circuit board and the coupling port and a magnetic field coupling component configured to couple a magnetic field between the circuit board and the coupling port.

The present application discloses embodiments that relate to a radar system. The embodiments may include a plurality of radiating waveguides each having a waveguide input. The embodiments also include an attenuation component, which can be located on a circuit board. The embodiments further include a beamforming network. The beamforming network includes a beamforming network input. The beamforming network also includes a plurality of beamforming network outputs, where each beamforming network output is coupled to one of the waveguide inputs. Additionally, the beamforming network includes a coupling port, wherein the coupling port is configured to couple at least one waveguide of the system to a component external to the waveguide.

Surface mount assembled waveguide transition

A device is provided that includes a first waveguide configured to guide propagation of RF waves inside the first waveguide. A first side of the first waveguide is configured to emit an evanescent field associated with the propagation of the RF waves inside the first waveguide. The device also includes a second waveguide having a second side positioned within a predetermined distance to the first side of the first waveguide. The second waveguide is configured to guide propagation, inside the second waveguide, of induced RF waves associated with the evanescent field from the first waveguide. The device also includes a first probe coupled to the first waveguide and configured to emit the RF waves for propagation inside the first waveguide. The device also includes a second probe coupled to the second waveguide and configured to receive induced RF waves propagating inside the second waveguide.

The present application discloses embodiments that relate to a radar system. The embodiments may include a plurality of radiating waveguides each having a waveguide input. The embodiments also include an attenuation component, which can be located on a circuit board. The embodiments further include a beamforming network. The beamforming network includes a beamforming network input. The beamforming network also includes a plurality of beamforming network outputs, where each beamforming network output is coupled to one of the waveguide inputs. Additionally, the beamforming network includes an attenuation port, wherein the attenuation port is configured to couple the beamforming network to the attenuation component. The attenuation component dissipates received electromagnetic energy.

PCB integrated waveguide terminations and load

A device is provided that includes a first platform having a first side, and a second platform having a second side positioned within a predetermined distance to the first side. The device also includes an actuator configured to cause a relative rotation between the first platform and the second platform such that the first side of the first platform remains within the predetermined distance to the second side of the second platform. The device also includes a probe mounted to the first platform, and a plurality of probes mounted to the second platform. The device also includes a signal conditioner coupled to the plurality of probes. The signal conditioner may select one of the plurality of probes based on an orientation of the first platform relative to the second platform. The signal conditioner may then to use the selected probe for wireless communication with the probe on the first platform.
