A process of forming an air cooled turbine airfoil using a metal additive process, where the airfoil is formed by first producing a ceramic core having an internal cooling circuit shape, and then building up the airfoil over the ceramic core. The ceramic core is then leached away, and the outer surface of the airfoil is machined to remove rough surfaces formed by the metal additive process.

Process for forming an air cooled turbine airfoil

An apparatus and a process for producing a shrouded centrifugal impeller where a rear hub opening is machined into the stock material so that hard to reach surfaces in the enclosed passages can be machined. When the hard to reach passages are machined to a final stage, the rear hub opening is closed using a process such as electron beam melting or electron beam welding to enclose the passages and form a single piece shrouded impeller.

Method of manufacturing a shrouded centrifugal impeller for high speed use

A method for designing an air cooled turbine airfoil includes selecting a number of different internal cooling air circuits, forming a ceramic core for each of the different cooling air circuits, forming a metal airfoil over each of the ceramic cores, leaching away the ceramic cores, mounting the airfoils in a stage of a turbine, passing a hot gas stream through the turbine, passing cooling air through each of the airfoils, and measuring a pressure and temperature differential across each of the airfoils to determine which cooling air circuit has the best performance.

Method for testing variable cooling geometries in a turbine vane

A hollow rotor shaft for use in a small twin spool gas turbine engine in which the hollow rotor shaft is assembled by welding two hollow shaft sections together to form the single shaft assembly. One of the hollow shaft sections includes a lip that functions to form a snug fit prior to welding and also functions as a weld filler material. The hollow shaft ends each include a hole to allow for pressure equalization during the welding process to prevent bulging of the hollow shaft. To ensure a full penetration weld, an orbital welding process is used while passing an insert gas such as argon through the hollow shaft to minimize the buildup of material on the inner surface of the weld from the welding process. The shaft ends are pre-heated prior to welding. An insert gas is passed through the inner surface of the shaft sections during welding to prevent buildup of material on the inner surface of the hollow rotor shaft. After welding, material is removed from the outer surfaces of the shaft sections to form the outer surface of the hollow rotor shaft. And, then heat treatment at a high temperature while cooling the shaft with the insert gas occurs. Then, a second heat treatment at about half the first temperature occurs while also passing the insert gas through the shaft for cooling. The welded and heat treated hollow shaft is then balanced by removing material from around the holes.
