A universal adjustable bed is provided to accommodate twin, twin extra long, full extra long, queen, etc. adjustable beds through a single adjustable bed mechanism which can be accommodated in beds irrespective of the differences in sizes thereof. The adjustable bed mechanism includes headboard and footboard adjusting linkage mechanisms and drive mechanisms therefor with associated head, seat, thigh and foot boards, all unitized in a single assembly which can be 'drop-in' assembled to an associated bed foundation. Significantly, the support frame includes locating or connecting points which correspond in transverse distances to like support points of the bed foundation irrespective of the width of the specific bed foundation. In this manner a single universal adjustable bed mechanism can be dropped-in and connected to an appropriate bed foundation to form a bed of virtually any conventional size.

Method of constructing universal adjustable bed

A mattress retainer for use with adjustable beds. The mattress retainer can be secured to an upper surface of a mattress support, between the mattress support and a mattress positioned thereon. In one embodiment, the mattress support is configured to engage a taped edge border of the mattress to thereby constrain movement of the mattress relative to the mattress support when the mattress support is articulated to raise and/or lower various portions of the mattress. The mattress retainer includes a channel formed on an outboard edge for receiving the taped edge border of the mattress. The taped edge border can be clamped within the channel to thereby fix the position of the mattress relative to the mattress support.

An adjustable bed includes at a minimum a head support and a back support pivotally connected to each other, a mechanism for pivoting the head support automatically from a first position horizontal and coplanar to the back support to an inclined position, and the latter mechanism being effective upon further operation to pivotally move the back support from its horizontal position to any one of a number of inclined positions without altering the inclination of the head support relative to the back support.

Universal adjustable bed

A mattress clip is provided which, when used in pairs, secures a mattress to an adjustable bed to prevent the mattress from sliding off leg, thigh, hip and back supports of the adjustable bed. Two clips are secured to the thigh support in cantilever fashion with opposing free ends projecting toward each other and being received in axial open ends of a tube sewn to a cover of the mattress. Though limited transverse and longitudinal motion of the mattress relative to the leg, thigh, hip and back supports can take place during adjusting movements of the adjustable bed, the mattress is precluded from excessive shifting and cannot inadvertently or accidentally slide off the supports. Each mattress clip includes elongated openings through which bolts are passed for reception in aligned openings of the thigh support to permit limited transverse adjustment of the mattress clips.

A bracket is provided for use in pairs to secure a headboard to a bed frame. The bracket includes a first bracket assembly defined by relatively U-shaped pivotally connected first and second bracket members and a second bracket assembly defined by pivotally connected relatively shallow U-shaped third and fourth bracket members. The second and fourth bracket members are interconnected by relatively slidable first and second connector members of a connector assembly which can be fixed in selective positions of relative adjustment. The first and third bracket members are secured to a respective bed frame and headboard and the relative pivoting and sliding connections allow two such brackets to be utilized for any sized bed, be it single, queen, king, etc.

An articulated bed includes head/back and foot/leg sections each provided with a conventional electrically powered motor driver for driving an associated massage/ vibrator motor. A remote control handset includes a microprocessor for generating time-of-day signals and a key pad is used to encode a bed code which is bed-specific and a wake time. The microcontroller compares a predetermined wake-time setting with present time of day and generates a wake authorization signal which is transmitted to a receiver associated with the bed. The received signal of the receiver is conducted to a microcontroller which authenticates the bed code signal and responsive thereto energizes one or both of the vibrators at the desired wake time, preferably initiating minimum vibrations and progressively increasing vibrations to a maximum to wake an individual in/upon the bed. The microcontroller of the receiver includes circuitry to automatically cut off the vibrator motor(s) after a predetermined length of vibration time, such as thirty (30) minutes, to assure vibration termination absent human intervention.
