Techniques are described for expanding and/or improving the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 television protocol in robustly delivering the next generation broadcast television services. A receiver, to automatically switch from presenting a service on a first frequency to a second frequency such as when a mobile receiver is moving through a boundary region between two broadcasters, can temporarily use a satellite link or 5G wireless telephony or other over the top (OTT) source to acquire a service until an OTA link satisfies quality requirements.

To reduce energy consumption in a low power mode, a display device such as a TV deenergizes its display and components in its network stack while leaving its infrared (IR) receiver on. A home network device that is not a conventional TV remote control (RC), for instance, a smart speaker, can receive a voice command to energize the TV, and instead of sending a wake up command to the TV through the home network, transmits an IR wake up command or sonic wake up command or non-IP RF command to the TV, which energizes its network stack and display in response.

An electronic apparatus and method for retransmission of signals using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is disclosed. The electronic apparatus includes a controller to control a movement of a UAV to a location within a signal coverage area associated with a remote transmitter. The electronic apparatus further includes receiver circuitry disposed on the UAV to receive a first signal from the remote transmitter. The first signal corresponds to a first wireless communication standard. The electronic apparatus further includes a signal processor to process the first signal to obtain a second signal and transmission circuitry to control one or more antennas disposed on the UAV to transmit a beam of the second signal to an electronic device that includes one or more receivers. The second signal corresponds to a second wireless communication standard which is same as or different from the first wireless communication standard.

An electronic device and method for delivery of extended emergency notifications through sensory feedback is provided. The electronic device receives a signal from an Emergency Alert System (EAS) that includes one or more of a broadcast system or an Internet-based system. The electronic device extracts emergency information from the received signal. Thereafter, the electronic device determines an external device that is communicatively coupled to the electronic device. The electronic device controls the external device to generate a type of sensory feedback that corresponds to an emergency alert. The type of sensory feedback is generated based on at least a portion of the emergency information.

Techniques are described for expanding and/or improving the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 television protocol. In an ATSC 3.0 environment, receivers (including consumer and professional receivers) have signal reception parameters and antenna factors available to them. These reception parameters, together with time and location data are transmitted to one or more servers that maintain databases of reception characteristics. This data is analyzed such that a set of likely receivable signals (based on reception parameters, date/time, location, geographical features, transmitter information, etc.) is identified. Receivers query the servers to receive information indicating the set of likely receivable signals to reduce channel scan time by scanning only or first for more-receivable channels. Also, difficult reception locations identified in the data collected by the servers are used in aggregate to guide RF improvements (e.g., adding SFN transmitters). Further, the data collected by the servers may provide data to be used to feed 'MFN' data.

The system acquires a video stream to be transmitted to an electronic device and determines aspect ratio information associated with content included in the video stream. The system further determines a change in an aspect ratio of the content based on the aspect ratio information. The change in the aspect ratio may be from a first value at a first timestamp to a second value at a second timestamp for a duration of the content. The system signals information indicative of the determined change to the electronic device.

The set of objects corresponds to an emergency at the geo-location. The electronic device further detects an emergency alert audio in the received first media content. The electronic device further extracts an emergency alert message received over a second broadcast channel associated with the geo-location based on the detected set of objects and the emergency alert audio in the received first media content. The electronic device further renders an emergency alert signal associated with the emergency alert message.

The generated text-enhanced icon may include the determined set of texts positioned at a set of defined locations associated with the determined graphical icon. The first electronic device may generate an encoded emoji sequence associated with the generated text-enhanced icon, based on the determined graphical icon, the determined set of texts, and the set of defined locations. The first electronic device may transmit the encoded emoji sequence to a second electronic device associated with the first electronic device to further render the generated text-enhanced icon.
