An orthopedic prosthesis and a method for rapidly manufacturing the same are provided. The orthopedic prosthesis includes a solid bearing layer, a porous bone-ingrowth layer, and an interdigitating layer therebetween. A laser sintering technique is performed to manufacture the orthopedic prosthesis.

Rapid manufacturing of porous metal prostheses

Various embodiments of femoral trochlea prostheses useable in a knee joint. The knee joint includes a patella and a distal femur with a femoral trochlea, or patello-femoral groove. In one embodiment, a femoral trochlea prosthesis includes a distal tail. In another embodiment, a femoral trochlea prosthesis includes a wing or extension portion. In yet another embodiment, a set of femoral trochlea prostheses includes a plurality of prostheses having differing thicknesses. In still another embodiment, a femoral trochlea prosthesis includes a porous medium on various portions of the prosthesis.

Femoral trochlea prostheses

An orthopedic system prepares a surface of an anatomical structure to receive an orthopedic prosthesis. A method for using the same is also disclosed. The orthopedic system includes a surgical instrument and a guide. The guide includes an anterior portion and a distal portion that is at least partially elevated relative to the anterior portion. The distal portion includes at least one track that is sized to receive the surgical instrument while preparing the surface of the anatomical structure.

An orthopaedic prosthesis and a method for rapidly manufacturing the same are provided. The orthopaedic prosthesis includes a solid bearing layer, a porous bone-ingrowth layer, and an interdigitating layer therebetween. A laser sintering technique is performed to manufacture the orthopaedic prosthesis.

A constrained prosthetic knee having a modular hinge post and a rotating bearing. A cannulated hinge post is rotatably connected to the femoral component of the knee prosthesis so that a hinge post extension may be anteriorly positioned through the hinge post and into the tibial component of the knee prosthesis, after positioning of the femoral component in the femur and the tibial component in the tibia. The hinge post is preassembled to the femoral component so that such assembly is not required during the implantation procedure. A meniscal component forming the rotating bearing of the knee prosthesis is packaged together with the hinge post extension so that the appropriate hinge post extension is readily available. The meniscal component includes a mechanism for preventing lift off of the meniscal component from the tibial component, while allowing rotation of the meniscal component relative to the tibial component.

A device () used during a medical procedure to engage a cross-section of a bone is disclosed herein. The device is selectively expandable to correspond to the cross-section of the bone. Once the device is properly sized, the device is used as a sizing tool to select the proper size of an implant or as a surgical guide for preparing the bone with a surgical instrument, for example.

Expandable arthroplasty plates

A constrained prosthetic knee having a modular hinge post and a rotating bearing. A cannulated hinge post is rotatably connected to the femoral component of the knee prosthesis so that a hinge post extension may be anteriorly positioned through the hinge post and into the tibial component of the knee prosthesis, after positioning of the femoral component in the femur and the tibial component in the tibia. A meniscal component forming the rotating bearing of the knee prosthesis is packaged together with the hinge post extension so that the appropriate hinge post extension is readily available.

An adapter to provide moveable configurations of securing structures such as fastener apertures or throughbores for fastening a surgical instrument to an anatomical structure, such as a bone. The adapter is connectable to the surgical instrument in a plurality of discrete locations on the surgical instrument, thereby allowing a surgeon to select an optimum fixation location for fastening the surgical instrument to the anatomical structure. The adapter may be cannulated to accommodate a fastener and may be slidably affixed to the surgical instrument while simultaneously providing stable fixation between the surgical instrument and the bone. The adapter may be configured to mate with another adapter having a similar configuration such that multiple fixation locations may be provided to the surgeon. Moreover, a plurality of adapters may be connected to the surgical instrument either directly or indirectly through another adapter to select multiple optimum fixation locations.

Surgical instrument adapter

Various embodiments of femoral trochlea prostheses useable in a knee joint. The knee joint includes a patella and a distal femur with a femoral trochlea, or patello-femoral groove. In one embodiment, a femoral trochlea prosthesis includes a nonarticulating surface including contoured surfaces and/or planar surfaces. The present disclosure also provides a method for preparing a bone surface for receiving the prostheses described herein.

A method of preparing the proximal tibial and distal ends of the femur for the implantation of prosthetic components, including the steps of exposing the joint; resecting the distal end of the femur; resecting the tibia; and making a preliminary rough cut of a posterior portion of the pair of condyles. The rough cut is made by positioning a guide on the distal end of the femur and severing a small piece of the posterior portion of the pair of condyles. The rough cut is made prior to the step of resecting the tibia. The method may include finishing the femur by severing and removing a final piece of the posterior portion of the pair of condyles. The small piece removed in the preliminary rough cut step is sized to preserve enough of posterior portion to permit the removal of the final piece.

A calibration device for a milling instrument is provided. The calibration device may be a burr guard which may be attached to the milling instrument. The calibration device may calibrate the milling instrument to provide a predetermined depth of alteration to an anatomical structure.
