This invention provides a method and system for distributing multiband wireless communications signals. Downlink RF signals in a plurality of downlink frequency bands are received and then combined into a combined downlink RF signal at the main unit. The combined downlink RF signal is subsequently split into multiple downlink RF-parts, which are converted to multiple downlink optical signals and optically transmitted to the remote units. At each remote unit, a delivered downlink optical signal is first converted back to a downlink RF-part which is subsequently separated into a plurality of downlink RF-groups by frequency band. Each downlink RF-group is individually conditioned (e.g., filtered and amplified). The individual-conditioned downlink RF-groups are then combined and transmitted to a dedicated downlink antenna.

Method and system for distributing multiband wireless communications signals

Waking/alerting people with a random offset time added to a pre-programmed wake-up/alert time, the improved method and apparatus disclosed in the present invention maximizes time confusion and uncertainty to provide an extra urgency to get up and/or get ready. In an embodiment, an alarm clock chooses a random time offset of D minutes without the user's knowledge. The alarm sounds D minutes before the preset wake-up time while displaying the current time plus D minutes. Thus, even though a user realizes that the alarm has sounded earlier than the preset time, he does not know exactly how many minutes earlier. Alternatively, the alarm could sound D minutes after the preset wake-up time. Again, the user does not know how much offset has been inserted by the clock. This uncertainty forces the user to assume the worst-case and get up quickly.

A method for reducing the required number of channels needed to serve distributed communication traffic from a centralized capacity resource. The crucial aspect of the system under consideration is that the capacity needs vary as a function of time. Specially, a cellular communication system is described in which the basestations are centrally located and RF channels are diverted, by means of an RF switch, to remotely located cells. The number of traffic channels allocated to each cell is a time dependent offered traffic in the cells and the total number of available channels.

Adaptive capacity management in a centralized basestation architecture

A multi-frequency pilot beacon adapted to a CDMA system using at least two different carrier frequencies, F and F , for supplying PN sequences at these frequencies. The pilot beacon has a pseudorandom noise generator for supplying a pseudorandom noise sequence PN and a frequency conversion mechanism for converting the PN sequence to a first pilot beacon centered at the first CDMA carrier F and a second pilot beacon centered at the second CDMA carrier F . The multi-frequency pilot beacon can be provided at a base station of a given cell to transmit the pilot beacons within that cell and the base station antenna can be used for transmitting the pilot beacons in this embodiment. Alternatively, multi-frequency pilot beacons can be provided wherever necessary within the CDMA system. The multi-frequency pilot beacon is useful in frequency hand-off operations and gathering information about cellular users in the CDMA system

Multi-frequency pilot beacon for CDMA systems

This invention provides a cellular network architecture in which traffic channel resources are centralized and dynamically allocated to remote cells according to the demand. The present invention provides a method for maximizing capacity resources by dynamically sectorizing cells in a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) cellular network. The present invention further provides a CDMA cellular communications network in which centralized traffic channel resources are distributed to remote cells by use of WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) on optical fibers and remote cells are dynamically sectorized according to the traffic demand and the grade-of-service requirement. The primary advantage of the present invention is that it enables a cellular network to dynamically manage and optimally utilize its capacity resources without having to change its hardware design, in contrast to the static and passive nature of the prior art cellular networks. The present invention provides a cost-effective build-out strategy for cellular network operators.

Dynamic sectorization in a CDMA cellular system employing centralized base-station architecture

Individual channels are centrally and tunably selected for emission in a distributed wireless communications system. A high-frequency signal received at a central antenna is down-converted such that a selected channel corresponds to a predetermined frequency range. Non-selected channels are filtered out. The selected channel is transmitted to remote locations over commonly available transmission lines, up-converted, and re-emitted. The transmitted channel is chosen by tuning the frequency of the local oscillator used for down-conversion. A high-stability global tuning signal is used to tune and stabilize the local oscillators used for up-conversion. The global tuning signal is generated by frequency-dividing the down-conversion local oscillator signal by a fixed number, while the up-conversion local oscillator signals are generated by frequency-multiplying the global tuning signal by the same fixed number. Phase-locked loops are used for frequency multiplication and stabilization. Applications include cellular communications, cordless telephony, local RF communications, interactive multimedia video, and high bit-rate local communications.

Centralized channel selection in a distributed RF antenna system

A frequency band, or test band, located between the uplink and downlink frequency bands of a distributed, frequency duplexed network is used in a novel way to isolate block-level faults within the network. A test signal having frequencies within the test signal band is generated and fed into a downlink path of a branch of the communication network. When the test signal encounters a remote station having duplexing means, the test signal leaks through the duplexing means into an uplink path of the remote station. This occurs because the real filters of the duplexing means do not work perfectly, frequencies outside of the uplink and downlink bands, especially those in the test signal band, will leak through its components. The amount of attenuation of the test signal in leaking through the communication station indicates the operability status of the components therein. By monitoring the power level of the test signal in the uplink and downlink paths of the branch, faults can be quickly isolated.
