Visual-inertial odometry uses visual input from a camera and inertial motion measurements to track the motion of an object. This technique can be applied to surveying urban environments, such as a curb or streetscape, that are impractical to survey with a surveyor's wheel, GPS, or imagery from cars. Making visual-inertial odometry measurements of a curb with a handheld surveying device yields relative measurements from a starting point to an ending point on the curb. These relative measurements can be pinned to an absolute coordinate frame using measurements of gravity made while acquiring the visual-inertial odometry measurements and absolute measurements of the starting and ending points.

Methods and apparatus for curbside surveying

Techniques are described that enable and assist a social networking system in curating user generated content for publication without relying on a popularity or following of a creator of the content. In some cases, the social networking system may receive a content item generated by a user and determine one or more content centric metrics associated with the content item. The social networking system may then select content items for publication based on the associated content centric metrics.

Systems and methods are described that include providing, on a touchscreen display of an electronic device, a stream of content items, at least some of which are associated with a corresponding display anchor. Inputs are detected at the touchscreen display and the inputs are associated with a scroll speed. The scroll speed may be based on a detected distance between the inputs on the touchscreen and an elapsed time between at least two of the inputs. In response to determining a lack of input for a predefined time period, a display anchor can be determined and selected. The display anchor may correspond to a content item to be used as a pause location for the stream. The scrolling of the stream of content items can be paused at the pause location to use the selected display anchor to display the content item in a top viewable portion of the display.

Automatic positioning of content items in a scrolling display for optimal viewing of the items

A method includes receiving, at a server, a dynamic current geographic location of a mobile computing device and, in response, accumulating individual push notifications that are relevant to the dynamic current geographic location of the mobile computing device. The individual push notifications are accumulated in a buffer over a first accumulation time interval. The method further includes sending a limited number of individual push notifications accumulated in the buffer at a controlled rate to the mobile computing device over a computer network.
