Implementations disclosed herein provide for increasing storage drive performance by reserving a region of user-writeable storage space on a storage medium for overprovisioning uses, including performance-enhancing functions. Until a capacity condition of the storage drive is satisfied, write operations targeting the reserved region are written to another equal-sized region that does not contain user data.

Dynamic storage device region provisioning

Various zone forwarding management techniques disclosed herein generally provide efficient methods of data caching, steering, mapping, and migration to reduce write amplification and command latency. In one implementation, a zone-forward storage medium management method includes receiving commands to write data sets to target LBAs included in a consecutive sequence of LBAs, selectively mapping the sequence of LBAs to a plurality of contiguous physical zones, and selectively writing the data sets to the physical zones. Various techniques may be used to migrate valid data of the plurality of physical zones to one physical zone.

Zone forward drive management

This disclosure is related to media cache cleaning based on workload. In some examples, a read-modify-write (RMW) operation may merge new data with existing data and the merge may be interrupted without losing the amount of work already processed. This can be particularly useful for shingled magnetic recording (SMR) systems that utilize a large cache, such as a media cache, that can accumulate many entries that might need to be merged with existing data. An RMW operation can be interrupted such that a host command does not timeout.

Media cache cleaning based on workload

The present disclosure generally relates to shingled recording systems, such as shingled magnetic recording (SMR). In some embodiments, systems having a data storage device containing a write cache and shingled bands may store new data from a host in the write cache before writing it to shingled track main storage. The system may determine when to throttle completion of commands based on a number of unique bands associated with data stored in the write cache.

Limit disc nodes by band usage

Systems, devices, apparatuses, and methods for segmented read-modify-write operations are disclosed. The examples provided can allow a system to perform a read-modify-write (RMW) operation for data stored in a main storage that has a larger data size than is capable of being stored in an available buffer. Examples of such a system include discs having bands of shingled tracks. In such example, each band can be split into segments containing one or more tracks and a read-modify-write-write (RMWW) operation can be performed for each segment. Further, a logical guard band can be implemented to protect the segments from overwriting a next track in a shingled band. Also, multiple scratchpads may be implemented.
