A method of controlling an adjustable exhaust system for a marine engine includes receiving a vessel location of a marine vessel having an adjustable exhaust system and identifying a desired position of the bypass valve based on the vessel location and/or a current time. If the bypass valve is not in the desired position, an instruction is generated to adjust the bypass valve to the desired position to change a noise level generated by the adjustable exhaust system.

Location-based control of exhaust system for marine engines

A method of controlling an adjustable exhaust system for a marine engine includes receiving a vessel location of a marine vessel having an adjustable exhaust system and identifying a noise constraint based on the vessel location. A current exhaust mode of the adjustable exhaust system is identified. A determination is then made regarding whether the exhaust system is exceeding the noise constraint based on the current exhaust mode. If the noise constraint is exceeded, an instruction is generated to adjust the adjustable exhaust system to comply with the noise constraint.

A marine engine has a powerhead, a crankcase and a crankshaft disposed in the crankcase. A cooling system has a cooling passage that conveys cooling water for cooling the crankcase, a pump that pumps the cooling water from a body of water in which the marine engine is operated through the cooling passage, and a valve that controls discharge of the cooling water from the cooling passage.

A marine engine has first and second banks of piston-cylinders, and first and second cooling water passages that convey cooling water in parallel alongside the first and second banks of piston-cylinders, respectively. A cooling water pump pumps the cooling water through the first and second cooling water passages. A first temperature-responsive valve is configured to discharge the cooling water from both of the first and second cooling water passages when the cooling water reaches a first temperature threshold. A second temperature-responsive valve is configured to discharge the cooling water from both of the first and second cooling water passages when the cooling water reaches a second temperature threshold that is greater than the first temperature threshold.

A marine propulsion device has an internal combustion engine, an exhaust manifold that conveys exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, and a cooling water sprayer that is configured to spray a flow of cooling water radially outwardly toward an inner diameter of the exhaust manifold. The cooling water sprayer has a sprayer body that is configured to convey the flow of cooling water radially into the exhaust manifold and a nozzle configured to spray the flow of cooling water radially outwardly in a fan-shaped pattern toward the inner diameter of the exhaust manifold.
