An optical apparatus has an electroluminescent display energizable to emit image-bearing light along an optical axis. A reflective polarizer reflects light of a first polarization state and transmit light of a second polarization state orthogonal to the first polarization state. A quarter wave plate in the path of transmitted light of the second polarization state imparts retardance to conveyed light. A curved, partially reflective surface transmits incident light. An exit lens directs light from the curved, partially reflective surface to an exit pupil, with an eye relief of less than the focal length of an eye, wherein the optical apparatus forms an image with a field of view exceeding 40 degrees horizontally and 20 degrees vertically. The optical apparatus is configured for seating directly against the face of the viewer, to form the image peripheral to a primary field of view.

Wearable near-to-eye display with unhindered primary field of view

An optical apparatus has a laser light source to direct a modulated beam toward a scan mirror. An objective lens and the mirror define a curved focal surface, with a center of curvature at the scan mirror. A numerical aperture (NA) expander conforms to the concentric curved focal surface. Pupil relay optics relay an entrance pupil to an exit pupil of the viewer, the pupil relay optics defining an optical path between entrance and exit pupils. The optical path has a curved mirror surface to transmit half of the light from the modulated beam and has a first center of curvature at the entrance pupil. A first polarizing beam splitter in the optical path receives light from the scan mirror to reflect incident light of a first polarization and transmit incident light of a second polarization. The optical path directs the modulated light beam twice to the first polarizer.

Wearable display for near-to-eye viewing with expanded beam

An optical apparatus has a laser source to direct modulated light toward a scan mirror and objective lens that define a focal surface. Pupil relay optics relay a first pupil at the scan mirror to a second pupil at an eye lens, the pupil relay optics defining an optical axis extending between pupils and having a curved mirror that transmits substantially half of the modulated beam and that has a first center of curvature at the first pupil and a first polarizer in the path of light from the scan mirror to reflect incident light of a first polarization and first angle toward the curved mirror surface and transmit incident light of an orthogonal polarization and second angle, wherein the pupil relay optics direct the modulated light beam twice to the first polarizer, and wherein the modulated light incident the second time is collimated and directed toward the second pupil.

Wearable display for near-to-eye viewing

A wearable display apparatus for displaying an image has a source of modulated laser light and a scanning apparatus energizable to scan the modulated laser light from the source in a raster pattern and into the eye for forming an image. The scanning apparatus directs light into the eye of the viewer from a distance to the eye that is within the object focal length of the eye, positioned below the horizontal line of sight of the viewer, and disposed within a lower portion of the vertical peripheral field of view and substantially outside of the normal vertical field of view of the viewer. An optical fiber is disposed to direct the modulated laser light from the source to the scanning apparatus. A retaining band grips against the sides of the viewer's head and that seats the scanning apparatus against the viewer's face along or below the cheekbone.
