A drilling system includes an internal assembly comprising a chassis, a flow diverter, or both, and a strain gauge coupled to the chassis, the flow diverter, or both, in which the strain gauge is configured to output a signal associated with a strain deformation of the internal assembly. The drilling system also includes a drill collar coupled to the internal assembly, in which the internal assembly extends along the drill collar, and the drill collar encloses the internal assembly of the internal assembly such that a strain deformation of the drill collar causes the strain deformation of the internal assembly.

Indirect detection of bending of a collar

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium that stores instructions executable by one or more processors, in which the instructions cause the one or more processors to determine a threshold value associated with an axial acceleration oscillation amplitude at a drill bit, in which the drill bit is a part of a drilling system. The instructions further cause the one or more processors to receive an operating parameter value of the drilling system, compare the operating parameter value with the threshold value, and adjust an operation of the drilling system in response to comparing the operating parameter value with the threshold value.

Systems and methods to determine rotational oscillation of a drill string

Changes to the vibrational frequencies of a drill string or BHA are monitored for prognostic health monitoring purposes. When one or more orders of resonance frequencies deviate from a baseline frequency, the magnitude of the deviation, and possibly the rate of deviation, is evaluated. When the deviation exceeds a threshold value, an alert is triggered. The alert may be triggered by downhole processing of the vibration data and conveyed to an operator to allow changes in operational parameters or removal of the component from the wellbore. The alert may instead be triggered by post-run processing of stored and dumped data, that can be used to evaluate whether the tool can be re-run, or whether it should be inspected, repaired, or scrapped.

Prognostic health monitoring of downhole tools

A downhole closed loop method for controlling a drilling toolface includes measuring first and second attitudes of the subterranean borehole at corresponding first and second upper and lower survey stations. The first and second attitudes are processed downhole while drilling to compute an angle change of the subterranean borehole between the upper and lower survey stations. The computed angle change is compared with a predetermined threshold. This process may be continuously repeated while the angle change is less than the threshold. The first and second attitudes are further processed downhole to compute a toolface angle when the angle change of the subterranean borehole is greater than or equal to the threshold. The toolface angle may then be further processed to control a direction of drilling of the subterranean borehole.

Closed loop control of drilling toolface

A method for removing material with a bit includes rotating a bit in a first direction, changing the rotational direction and rotating the bit in an opposing second direction. Rotation of the bit in the first direction and rotation of the bit in the second direction both remove material.

Bi-directional drilling systems and methods

A method to perform a drilling operation. The method includes calibrating an axial survey sensor of a bottom hole assembly (BHA) by obtaining, from the axial survey sensor, a data log as a first function of azimuthal angle within a borehole, generating, by a computer processor of the BHA and using a pre-determined algorithm, a fitted curve as a second function of the azimuthal angle, wherein the fitted curve is generated based on the data log to represent a calibration error of the axial survey sensor, and extracting, by the computer processor of the BHA, a calibration parameter from the fitted curve. Accordingly, the drilling operation is performed using at least the axial survey sensor based on the calibration parameter.

Dynamic calibration of axial accelerometers and magnetometers

A method for determining a drilling state of a bottom hole assembly in a wellbore includes acquiring one or more downhole sensor measurements and processing the sensor measurements using a downhole processor to determine a drilling state of the bottom hole assembly. An operating state of the bottom hole assembly may be automatically changed in response to the determined drilling state. A method for computing a dynamic drilling energy of a bottom hole assembly includes acquiring at least one sensor measurement and processing the sensor measurements to obtain at least one of (i) an energy of axial motion of the bottom hole assembly, (ii) an energy of rotational motion of the bottom hole assembly, and (iii) an energy of lateral motion of the bottom hole assembly.

Downhole determination of drilling state

A method, system, and computer readable medium is disclosed to estimate a survey parameter (e.g., attitude) for a drilling operation in a subterranean formation. The survey parameter is calculated using multiple methods with the results of the different methods weighted to improve the accuracy at a given attitude of the tool and angular velocity of the sensor package. Results from the different methods are combined based on a weighting function to generate the improved values of inclination and azimuth. Specifically, the values of the weighting function depend, linearly or non-linearly, on the attitude of the tool and quality of the survey data. In one scenario, the attitude of the tool is approximated by the most recently obtained static inclination/azimuth. In addition, the quality of the survey data is approximated by a measure of vibration severity that is represented by the number of good data points based on the roll rate.
