A backlight assembly for a gauge of an automotive display panel and a method of illuminating a gauge of an automotive display panel is provided. The backlight assembly includes a lightpipe having a U-shaped configuration and a reflective dish surrounding the lightpipe. The lightpipe and the reflective dish are disposed on a mounting plate of the gauge above a liquid crystal display (LCD). Additionally, the backlight assembly includes one or more top firing light emitting diodes (LEDs) disposed adjacent to the lightpipe. The LEDs emit light to the lightpipe which in turn transmits light to the reflective dish. The reflective dish reflects back or disperses the light evenly to illuminate the graphic applique of the gauge.

Backlight assembly

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device having non-white and white light emitting diodes and a liquid crystal display. A spectrum converting material is positioned between non-white LEDs and the LCD to convert the non-white light from the LEDs toward a white light spectrum. The liquid crystal display may include a plurality of light emitting diodes, a light pipe, and a spectrum converting material. The spectrum converting material may be a phosphorized material located between the plurality of non-white light emitting diodes and the light pipe. A light extracting surface may be located near a first surface of the light pipe, a diffuser located near a second side of the light pipe, where the first and second sides are opposite sides of the light pipe, a reflective polarizer, and an liquid crystal display. The light from the light pipe may passes through the diffuser, the reflective polarizer, before backlighting the liquid crystal display. The non-white LEDs may include blue LED, ultraviolet LEDs, and the like.

LED backlighting system

A switch assembly comprises a substrate and a multi-way switch mounted on the substrate. A knob is connected to the multi-way switch and has a perimeter. The knob is used for controlling a position (e.g., a shaft position) or corresponding electrical state of the multi-way switch. At least one light source is associated with the substrate. A light diffuser is located at least partially in an optical path between one or more of the light sources and a region about the perimeter of the knob.
