A patient specific instrument is disclosed for correcting a condition present in a patient. The patient specific instrument includes a body that includes an inferior side having a bone engagement surface shaped to match a first surface of a first bone and a second surface of a second bone of a joint. The instrument also includes a superior side having a first guide feature and a second guide feature that together, with the bone engagement surface overlying the first surface and the second surface, are positioned to guide resection of the first bone and the second bone during a surgical osteotomy for correcting the condition. The body is configured to seat transverse to the joint with the bone engagement surface engaging the first surface of the first bone and the second surface of the second bone.

Patient-specific surgical methods and instrumentation

A patient-specific instrument is disclosed for performing an osteotomy. The patient-specific instrument includes a body that includes a proximal side, a distal side, a medial side, a lateral side, and an inferior side having a bone engagement surface shaped to match at least one of a first surface of a first bone, a second surface of a second bone, a third surface of a third bone, and a fourth surface of a fourth bone of adjacent joints. The instrument also includes a superior side having one or more guide features that are positioned to guide resection of at least one of the first bone, the second bone, the third bone, and the fourth bone. The body is configured to seat transverse to the adjacent joints with the bone engagement surface engaging at least one of the first surface, the second surface, the third surface, and the fourth surface.

Patient-specific osteotomy instrumentation

A method may be used to correct a condition present in a patient. The method may include obtaining a first bone model of a first bone of one or more bones of the patient's foot, and using at least the first bone model to generate a cutting guide model. The cutting guide model may define a first bone engagement surface shaped to match a first contour on the first bone, and a first guide feature that, with the first bone engagement surface overlying the first contour, is positioned to guide resection of the one or more bones as part of a surgical osteotomy for correcting the condition. The surgical procedure may be selected from a first group consisting of a bunion correction osteotomy, an Evans calcaneal osteotomy, and a medializing calcaneal osteotomy. The first bone may be selected from a second group consisting a metatarsus, a cuneiform, and a calcaneus.

A system for attaching first and second bone segments together may include a first component and a second component. The first component may have a first component bone engagement end implantable into a first bore formed in the first bone segment, and a first component attachment end. The second component may have a second component bone engagement end implantable into a second bore formed in the second bone segment, and a second component attachment end with a first projection that is movable, in response to a temperature change of the first projection, between insertion and locking configurations. In the insertion configuration, the first projection may be positioned to avoid interference with withdrawal of the second component attachment end from the first component attachment end. In the locking configuration, the first projection may be positioned to interfere with withdrawal of the second component attachment end from the first component attachment end.

Bone segment attachment system and method

The surgical retractors and methods disclosed herein are designed to retract tissues in an ergonomic and anatomically correct manner by matching tissue curvatures in order to minimize tissue damage and reduce incision sizes. In one embodiment, a surgical retractor may include a first blade with proximal and distal ends, and a second blade with proximal and distal ends. The distal end of the first blade may be pivotally coupled to the distal end of the second blade. The surgical retractor may also include a ratcheting mechanism that is configured to maintain a selected distance between the proximal end of the first blade and the proximal end of the second blade.

Surgical retractor

A surgical retractor and method for retracting tissue in a patient is anatomically designed for particular muscles and includes a light source the light beam of which is positionable relative to the surgical retractor. The surgical retractor has a pair of retraction blades carried on separate retraction portions held open by ratchet assemblies. Blades are manually retracted and held open by automatically engaging ratchet fingers and are designed to match muscle curvature, minimizing various risks and incision size. The first retraction portion carries the first blade and includes tines each with ratchet grooves, while the second retraction portion carries the second blade on a carriage that is movably carried on the tines. Resilient spring actuated fingers associated with the carriage has ratchet grooves that co-act with the ratchet grooves of the tines to provide the ratchet assemblies between the retraction portions that regulates movement of the carriage and the second blade relative to the first blade.

A polyaxial ankle joint replacement implant has a dual bearing component situated between a tibia attachment component and a talus attachment component. The dual bearing component includes a plate, a superior bearing bonded to the plate and providing translation with the tibia attachment component, and an inferior bearing providing translation with the talus attachment component. The tibia attachment component has peripheral transversely extending flanges that limit movement relative to the superior bearing and vice versa. The plate has a flange on its inferior surface that receives an opening in the inferior bearing, the size of the opening determining an amount of lateral translation. The plate also has unobstructed posterior and/or anterior ends that permit removal and replacement of the inferior bearing post-operative. This allows change from a mobile to fixed bearing (and vice versa), as well as a change in amount of degrees of translation.

Ankle joint replacement implant with bearing interchangeability

A semi-constrained polyaxial ankle joint replacement implant has a dual bearing component, a tibial component or plate adapted for attachment to a tibia or fibula bone, and a talar component or plate adapted for attachment to a talus or calceneus bone of the foot. The dual bearing component includes a superior bearing providing gliding articulation/translation between it and the tibial component, and an inferior bearing providing gliding articulation/translation between it and the talar component. The tibial plate has peripheral transversely extending flanges that semi constrain or limit movement relative to the superior bearing and/or vice versa. The inferior bearing has a flange extending upwardly from the superior surface thereof that is received in an opening in the intermediate plate to semi constrain or limit movement relative between the two components.

Semi constrained polyaxial endoprosthetic ankle joint replacement implant

An orthopedic prosthesis, system and method has a dual bearing component that, along with first and second bone anchoring components, provides multi-axial movement separately with respect to both the first and second bone anchoring components. An ankle prosthesis, system and method may thus be fashioned utilizing these principles that includes a dual bearing component, a tibial component adapted for attachment to the tibia bone, and a talar component adapted for attachment to the talus or calceneus bone of the foot. The dual bearing component includes a superior bearing providing gliding articulation/translation between it and the tibial component, and an inferior bearing providing gliding articulation/translation between it and the talar component. A bearing component plate provides a base or foundation for the superior and inferior bearings. The superior bearing is bonded to the bearing component plate while the inferior bearing moves with respect to the bearing component plate.
