A windshield of a vehicle includes a reflective polarizer. The windshield is configured to receive and reflect an image light emitted by a display toward a passenger of the vehicle, such that for a substantially normally incident light, the windshield has first and second reflection spectra versus wavelength for the incident light polarized along respective first and second directions. The first reflection spectrum includes a plurality of reflection bands. Each of the reflection bands has a maximum reflectance R1max between 20% and 80%. Between each pair of adjacent reflection bands in the plurality of reflection bands, the first reflection spectrum has a minimum reflectance R1min between 5% and 25%. In the visible wavelength range, the second reflection spectrum has a maximum reflectance R2max and a minimum reflectance R2min, such that R2max and R2min are within 15% of each other.

Windshield, display system, and reflective polarizer

An optical stack includes a reflective polarizer including a plurality of interference layers and an absorbing polarizer disposed on the reflective polarizer. The plurality of interference layers transmits at least about 85% of an incident light having a first polarization state, reflects at least about 80% of the incident light having a second polarization state, and transmits less than about 0.1% of the incident light having the second polarization state. The absorbing polarizer has a first transmittance for the first polarization state and a second transmittance for the second polarization state. An average of the first and second transmittances is greater than about 0.46. The second transmittance has a first standard deviation. The optical stack has a transmittance for the second polarization state having a second standard deviation which is less than the first standard deviation by at least about 10%. A display includes the optical stack.

Optical stack and display

Optical films, such as reflective polarizer films, and optical systems including the optical films are described. An optical system includes one or more optical lenses having at least one curved major surface, a partial reflector, and a reflective polarizer. For a substantially normally incident light in a predetermined wavelength range extending at least from about 450 nm to about 600 nm: the partial reflector has an average optical reflectance of at least 30%, and the reflective polarizer has an average optical reflectance Rs for a first polarization state, an average optical transmittance Tp for an orthogonal second polarization state, and an average optical reflectance Rp for the second polarization state, where Tp≥80%, Rp≤1%, and 50%≤Rs≤95%.

Optical system and optical film

An optical metasurface film includes a flexible polymeric film having a first major surface, a patterned polymer layer having a first surface proximate to the first major surface of the flexible polymeric film and having a second nanostructured surface opposite the first surface, and a refractive index contrast layer including a refractive index contrast material adjacent to the nanostructured surface of the patterned polymer layer forming a nanostructured bilayer with a nano structured interface. The nanostructured bilayer comprising a plurality of nanostructures disposed on the flexible polymeric film. The nanostructured bilayer imparts a light phase shift that varies as a function of position of the nano structured bilayer on the flexible polymeric film. The light phase shift of the nanostructured bilayer defines a predetermined operative phase profile of the optical metasurface film. A light reflecting layer is in optical communication with the nano structured bilayer.

Reflective optical metasurface films

A display includes a plurality of blue, green, and red light emitting elements having respective blue, green, and red emission spectra including respective blue, green, and red emission peaks at respective blue, green, and red peak wavelengths with respective blue, green, and red full width at half maxima (FWHMs). The display includes a display panel and an optically collimating film. For a substantially collimated incident light and for each of mutually orthogonal polarization states, an optical transmittance of the optically collimating film includes substantially distinct blue, green, and red transmission bands having respective blue, green, and red FWHMs that overlap at least 30% of the respective blue, green, and red FWHMs at a first incident angle of less than about 10 degrees and overlap less than 15% of the respective blue, green, and red FWHMs at a second incident angle of greater than about 30 degrees.

Display and display system

Optical films are disclosed that include a plurality of interference layers. Each interference layer reflects or transmits light primarily by optical interference. The total number of the interference layers is less than about 1000. For a substantially normally incident light in a predetermined wavelength range, the plurality of interference layers has an average optical transmittance greater than about 85% for a first polarization state, an average optical reflectance greater than about 80% for an orthogonal second polarization state, and an average optical transmittance less than about 0.2% for the second polarization state.

High contrast optical film and devices including the same

An organic light emitting diode (OLED) display includes a pixelated OLED display panel and a color-correction component disposed on the pixelated OLED display panel. The pixelated OLED display panel has a ratio of blue-to-red color mixing weights at 30 degrees of β, and a ratio of blue-to-red color mixing weights at 45 degrees of β, where β≥β≥1.05 and 1.5≥β≥1.1. The color-correction component is configured such that a ratio of blue-to-red color mixing weights at 45 degrees of the display is βand a ratio of blue-to-red color mixing weights at 30 degrees of the display is β, where β−0.1≥β≥2.1−βand β−0.05≥β≥2.05−β. Methods of making OLED displays are described.

Organic light emitting diode display with color-correction component having different color mixing weights

An optical stack includes a reflective polarizer, an absorbing polarizer, and a half-wave retarder. The half-wave retarder is disposed between the reflective and absorbing polarizers. For substantially normally incident light and a first polarization state, the reflective polarizer reflects at least about 60% of the incident light for at least a first wavelength less than a cut-off wavelength and transmits at least about 50% of the incident light for at least a second wavelength greater than the cut-off wavelength. For substantially normally incident light, the half-wave retarder has a first retardance of less than about 250 nanometers (nm) at the first wavelength and a second retardance at the second wavelength. A deviation of the first retardance from a first half-wave retardance corresponding to the first wavelength is less than a deviation of the second retardance from a second half-wave retardance corresponding to the second wavelength.

Optical stack having absorbing polarizer, half-wave retarder, and reflective polarizer

A glass laminate including first and second glass layers, a reflective film having opposed first and second major surfaces and disposed between the first and second glass layers with the first and second major surfaces facing the respective first and second glass layers, a first adhesive layer disposed between and bonding together the first glass layer and the reflective film, and a second adhesive layer disposed between and bonding together the second glass layer and the reflective film is described. The second adhesive layer is thicker than the first adhesive layer such that the first major surface of the reflective film is separated from an outermost major surface of the first glass layer by a distance d1, the second major surface of the reflective film is separated from an outermost major surface of the second glass layer by a distance d2, and 0.05≤d1/d2≤0.9.

A reflective polarizer has substantially distinct blue, green and red-infrared reflection bands for substantially normally incident light. A display system includes a display panel including blue, green and red light emitting pixels having respective blue, green and red peak wavelengths and respective blue, green and red FWHMs; and the reflective polarizer disposed on the light emitting pixels. The reflective polarizer: reflects at least about 60% of the incident light for each of the blue and green peak wavelengths and at least about 40% of the incident light for the red peak wavelength for a first polarization state; transmits at least about 60% of the incident light for each of the blue, green and red peak wavelengths for an orthogonal second polarization state; and has an absorption peak at a wavelength between the green and red FWHMs.

Reflective polarizer and display system

An optical stack () includes an optical diffuser () and a first reflective polarizer () disposed on the optical diffuser (). For substantially normally incident light and for nonoverlapping first and second wavelength ranges, the optical diffuser () has a first scattering rate Rfor at least one wavelength in the first wavelength range, and a second scattering rate Rfor at least one wavelength in the second wavelength range, such that R/Ris greater than or equal to 2. The first reflective polarizer () may transmit at least 40% of light for a first polarization state for each wavelength in the first wavelength range, may reflect at least 70% of light for an orthogonal second polarization state for each wavelength in the first wavelength range, and transmit at least 40% of light for each of the first and second polarization states and for each wavelength in the second wavelength range.

Optical diffuser with high infrared clarity

An optical system includes an extended illumination source configured to emit light from an extended emission surface thereof toward a display panel. The emitted light includes substantially distinct blue, green and red emission spectra having respective blue, green and red peaks at respective blue, green and red peak wavelengths, and corresponding blue, green and red full widths at half maxima (FWHMs). The blue FWHM extends from a smaller blue wavelength to a longer blue wavelength. The optical system further includes reflective polarizer disposed on the emission surface of the extended illumination source. The reflective polarizer includes a plurality of first polymeric layers. The optical system also includes an optical filter disposed between the reflective polarizer and the emission surface of the extended illumination source.

Optical system and optical combination

A display system includes a display panel configured to emit polarized light having a first polarization state and substantially distinct blue, green and red emission spectra having respective blue, green and red full widths at half maxima (FWHMs). The display system includes a reflective polarizer configured to reflect the polarized image light as a first reflected polarized image light. For substantially normally incident light and for the first polarization state, the reflective polarizer has a reflectance of greater than about 60% across each of the blue and red FWHMs, and a transmittance of at least about 50% for at least a first wavelength between the FWHMs of the blue and green emission spectra, and for at least a second wavelength between the FWHMs of the green and red emission spectra.

Display system for vehicle

A display system includes a display panel including a plurality light emitting pixels and a reflective polarizer disposed on the light emitting pixels. The reflective polarizer can have a reflection band having a lower overlap with an emission spectrum of red light emitting pixels for substantially normally incident light and a higher overlap with the emission spectrum of the red light emitting pixels for at least one incident angle greater than about 40 degrees. The reflective polarizer can have a reflection band overlapping an emission spectrum of blue light emitting pixels for substantially normally incident light.

An optical film includes a plurality of alternating first and second polymeric layers, such that the first polymeric layers have a smaller average in-plane index of refraction than the second polymeric layers and the first polymeric layers have a glass transition temperature of at least 107 deg. C. The optical film may be a reflective polarizer. An optical stack includes a linear absorbing polarizer and the reflective polarizer disposed on, and bonded to, the absorbing polarizer. The reflective polarizer has an optical reflectance of at least 60% for a first polarization state and an optical transmittance of at least 60% for an orthogonal second polarization state. When heated at 105 deg. C. for 15 minutes, a difference in shrinkage of the reflective polarizer and the absorbing polarizer along the first and second polarization states is greater than about zero and 0.2%, respectively.
