The present invention relates the use of a 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole compound of the formula R(QUV)as an UV absorbing agent in coatings.

Use of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole compounds as an UV absorbing agent in coatings

The instant invention relates to novel tris(hydroxyphenyl)triazines coating compositions, for instance automotive coating compositions, and to novel tris(hydroxyphenyl) triazines UV-absorbers having a long wavelength sifted absorption spectrum with significant absorbance up to 420 nm. Further aspects of the invention are a UV stabilized composition containing the novel UV-absorbers, a process for the stabilization of organic materials and coatings and the use of the compounds as UV-light stabilizers for organic materials and coatings.

Tris(hydroxyphenyl) triazines

The present invention relates to symmetric diesters of hydroxyalkyl-4-hydroxy-tetraalkylpiperidine compounds and their use as light stabilizers. They are compatible with and soluble in coating formulations of different polarity.

A stabilizer composition comprising (A) a compound of the formula (I) wherein R is (CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O&#x2014;), &#x2014;R; &#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH(OH)&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O&#x2014;R; or &#x2014;CH(R)&#x2014;CO&#x2014;O&#x2014;R; n is 0 or 1; Ris C-Calkyl or C2Calkenyl or C-Caryl or CO&#x2014;C-Calkyl; Ris H or C-Calkyl; Ris C-Calkyl or C-Calkenyl or CCcycloalkyl; and (B) one or more compounds selected from benzotriazoles of the formula (IIa), 2-hydroxybenzophenones of the formula (IIb), oxalanilides of the formula (IIc), 2-hydroxyphenyltriazines of formula (IId), cinnamates of formula (IIe), and benzoates of formula (IIf) as defined in claimis especially effective towards stabilizing organic materials against degradation induced by light, heat or oxidation.

The instant invention discloses a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula I:wherein the general symbols are as defined in claim, which process comprises reacting a compound of formula II:wherein the general symbols are as defined in claim, with a compound of the formula III:wherein Ris as defined in claim.
