An apparatus is described which serves for a pyrometallurgical processing of fine-grained solids suspended in high-oxygen gases, comprising a generally horizontally extending cylindrical vessel and a combustion shaft, which communicates with and vertically opens into the vessel which is provided with a gas outlet opening and with an opening for discharging molten material. An almost complete separation of the molten particles is effected in that the mouth of the combustion shaft tangentially opens into the vessel at the entrance of a spiral-shaped entrance passage, which opens into a discharge slot, which is formed in the shell of the vessel and which in the lower portion of the shell of the substantially cylindrical vessel extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vessel.

A cathode for use in the electrolytic refining of copper which comprises a carrying bar and a flat starting plate, which is secured to the carrying bar and made of special steel and provided with electrically insulating edge strips at least at its vertical longitudinal edges, which are formed in their edge faces with a groove, which contains an edge strip, that is made of a natural or synthetic polymer and fits into said groove and protrudes from the edge throughout its length. To prevent a deposition of metal in the critical region, the insulating edge strip which has been fitted into the dovetail groove has been formed by a longitudinal folding of a polymer film and contains at its fold line a wire of special steel, and the side portions of said film are coextensive and lie one over the other and are liquid-tightly joined to each other. An apparatus for producing ignitable solids-gas suspensions has a feeder for vertically feeding the solids-primary gas suspension, a secondary gas passage concentrically surrounding said feeder, and a stage for mixing both streams. In order to improve the igniting and melting of solids-gas suspensions in such apparatus, the feeder for the solids-primary gas suspension consists of a pressure relief vessel, which is provided with a tangentially extending supply line for supplying the solids-primary gas suspension, which supply line opens into said vessel in a substantially horizontal direction, and in that the pressure relief vessel is succeeded by two series-connected mixing stages which consist of venturi diffusers, the secondary gas passage concentrically surrounds the diffuser in the first mixing stage and the second mixing stage contains a flame-sustaining annular gas burner having fuel gas and oxygen nozzles arranged in alternation and surrounding the diffuser outlet, which is provided with a cooling chamber. The entire burner apparatus is mounted on the top rim of a vertical combustion shaft, which opens into a horizontal melting cyclone chamber.

A current-feeding cathode-mounting device comprises a metal-sheathed carrying rail of copper and a permanent cathode plate consisting of the same material as the sheath and joined by welding at least along part of a longitudinal edge and wherein at least an end portion of the rail is unsheathed at least along part of its extent. In order to increase the creep strength and durability and to ensure a low-resistance contact, the carrying rail consists of a hollow copper section, the sheath consists of special steel, the sheath is joined to the carrying rail by a diffusion-preventing non-porous weld, and the permanent cathode of special steel is joined to the sheath by an interrupted seal weld. The carrying rail consists suitably of a copper tube. In accordance with a further feature the copper tube provided with a special steel sheath has been deformed to constitute a composite having an elliptical or oval cross-section or a cross-section having two parallel sides, and the major axis of said cross-section lies in the plane of the cathode plate.

An anode for a cell for electrolytic recovery of nonferrous metals especially copper is provided with a plate-shaped deposition surface, a hanger for suspending the anode in the cell, and a perforated pipe along a bottom edge of the anode for discharging bubbles of gas upwardly in the electrolyte along the faces of the anode. A bar along an edge of the anode can be provided with a feeder for the gas communicating with the pipe and the hanger may have a passage communicating with this feeder.
