A safety system () for an automotive vehicle () comprises a gas tank () in which pressurized gas is stored, a valve () associated with the gas tank (), at least one airbag () connected to the valve () via a fluid line (), and a control device (). In the control device () vehicle information () is stored and the control device () is configured to control the valve () in an accident situation of the automotive vehicle () on the basis of the vehicle information () and to fill the airbag () with the gas stored in the gas tank (). The invention further shows a method of controlling a safety system of an automotive vehicle and a control device.

A vehicle occupant restraint device comprises a control unit and a group of at least two matched airbags () for the protection of a vehicle occupant () on a particular vehicle seat (). The control unit is arranged and the airbags () are disposed and designed so that, in a collision case, the control unit differentiates between a first situation in which the vehicle occupant () is located in a standard distance area relative to a first airbag () and a second situation in which the vehicle occupant () is located in a rear area which is further distant from the first airbag () than the standard distance area. When the first situation is given, the control unit activates the first airbag () only. In contrast, when the second situation is given, the control unit activates the first airbag () and additionally at least a second airbag () of the group, with the first airbag () backing the second airbag ().

The invention relates to an inflatable airbag () for the protection of a person comprising a flexible sheath () which comprises at least two fingerlike extensions (), wherein the flexible sheath () delimits a closed gas expansion chamber by the fingerlike extensions (). The invention excels by the fact that the fingerlike extensions () are connected by at least one of being stitched, glued or welded to each other so that in an inflated state the airbag () takes a three-dimensional shape. The invention relates to gas generating compositions for use in safety devices for vehicles. In particular, the invention relates to said compositions based on guanidine nitrate used in pedestrian protection devices. The composition substantially comprises 75 to 98% by weight of guanidine nitrate as fuel and 2 to 25% by weight of a burn accelerator selected from the group of the transition metal compounds, the metal nitrates, metal chlorates, metal perchlorates, ammonium perchlorate and mixtures thereof, wherein the transition metal compounds are selected from the compounds of the transition metals Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Zr and Mo and wherein the gas generating composition exhibits a burn rate of from 3 to 17 mm/s at 20 MPa.

Gas generator and airbag module

A vehicle safety system includes a module including an airbag and an inflator. The inflator includes a housing () in which a combustion chamber () containing a pyrotechnic propellant is arranged in which hot gas is generated and which housing includes at least one escape orifice () toward the environment of the inflator (), as well as a coolant reservoir () arranged in the housing () in which coolant is accommodated prior to activation of the inflator () and which has at least one coolant outlet orifice ('). The coolant outlet orifice () is arranged in direct vicinity of the outlet orifice (). Upon activation of the inflator () coolant flows out of the inflator into the protection system and wets an adjacent wall () of the protection system against which also the hot gas is flowing.
