A microchip deployment system for a well includes a drilling fluid pump, a drilling fluid pipe extending from the drilling fluid pump into the well, and a microchip deployment mechanism provided on the drilling fluid pipe. The microchip deployment mechanism comprises a housing and a spherical valve. The housing has an input opening and an output opening. The spherical valve is rotatably arranged within the housing, and the spherical valve comprises a microchip pocket. The spherical valve is rotatable within the housing from a receiving position to a deploying position, wherein the microchip pocket is proximate to the input opening when in the receiving position, and wherein the microchip pocket is proximate to the output opening when in the deploying position.

System for deploying microchips

A method includes utilizing a charging and communication interface and a sensor system to gather downhole measurements. The method further includes charging and activating the sensor system using the charging and communication interface, installing the sensor system into a nozzle of a drill bit, running the drill bit into a wellbore, conducting measurements using the sensor system, pulling the drill bit out of the wellbore, and contacting the charging and communication interface with the sensor system to retrieve the measurements from the sensor system.

A method of forming a composite cutter for a downhole drilling tool is described. The method includes: mixing a polycrystalline diamond powder and a cubic boron nitride powder with a molar ratio between 0.1 and 0.9 to form a catalyst-free composite mixture; placing the catalyst-free composite mixture into a mold configured in a shape of a cutter; exposing the catalyst-free composite mixture to an ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature treatment including a pressure between 11 Gigapascals (GPa) and 20 GPa, and a temperature between 1300 Kelvins (K) and 2600 K to form a solid composite body; and cooling the solid composite body to form the composite cutter.

Fabrication of downhole drilling tools

A system includes a sliding sleeve, a ball landing seat, a plurality of microchips, a hydraulic piston, and a ball catcher. The sliding sleeve is installed within a tubular body having an exit groove. The ball landing seat is formed by the sliding sleeve. The plurality of microchips are housed in a microchip ring installed within the sliding sleeve. The hydraulic piston is installed within the microchip ring and triggered by reception of a ball in the ball landing seat. The ball reduces a cross sectional area of a flow path while in the ball landing seat. The hydraulic piston releases the plurality of microchips through the exit groove and into the well to gather data. The ball catcher is configured to receive and hold the ball after the plurality of microchips are released into the well. The ball catcher and the ball are made of a dissolvable material.

Method and apparatus for downhole charging, initiation, and release of drilling micro sensing systems (microchips)

A downhole sub has a body defined by a wall extending in an axial direction from a first end to a second end. An inner surface of the wall defines a flow path through the downhole sub and an outer surface of the wall defines an outer diameter of the downhole sub. A compartment extends from the outer surface into the wall to having a depth less than a thickness of the wall. A housing may be removably fixed in the compartment. One or more mobile devices may be disposed in the housing. Each of the one or more mobile devices includes a sensor encapsulated in a protective material. A control element may block an opening of the housing, the control element is made of a dissolvable material configured to dissolve at a predetermined depth in a wellbore and release the one or more mobile devices into the wellbore.

A system includes a sliding sleeve, a ball landing seat, a plurality of microchips, a hydraulic piston, and a ball catcher. The sliding sleeve has a solid wall body and is installed within a tubular body. The tubular body has an exit groove. The ball landing seat is formed by the sliding sleeve. The plurality of microchips are housed in a microchip ring installed within the sliding sleeve. The hydraulic piston is installed within the microchip ring and is triggered by reception of a ball, blocking a flow path, in the ball landing seat. The hydraulic piston releases the plurality of microchips through the exit groove and into the well to gather data. The ball catcher is configured to receive and hold the ball after the plurality of microchips are released into the well.

A system includes a sliding sleeve, a ball landing seat, microchips, a ball catcher, and a charging ring. The sliding sleeve is installed within a tubular body. The tubular body has an exit groove. The plurality of microchips are configured to be released into the well to gather data upon reception of the ball in the ball landing seat. The ball catcher is configured to receive and hold the ball after the plurality of microchips are released into the well. The charging ring is electronically connected to the microchip ring and has a circuit, a power source, and a charging coil. The circuit has a voltage regulation chip, a microprocessor, and a circuit motion sensor.

A system for gathering downhole measurements includes a drill bit, at least one nozzle receptacle located on the drill bit, and a sensor system. The sensor system has a sensor housing, a flow path extending through the sensor housing, wherein the flow path allows fluid to flow through the sensor housing, and an internal cavity provided within the sensor housing separate from the flow path. The internal cavity contains components that include at least one sensor for gathering data about drill bit conditions and downhole conditions, a powering unit, a printed circuit board, and an electrical conductor, wherein the sensor housing is installed in the at least one nozzle receptacle.

A loss circulation material (LCM) testing apparatus includes an LCM testing cell. The LCM testing fluid is a slurry of LCM material and a wellbore drilling fluid. A fluid flow pathway within the LCM testing cell is defined between an inlet and an outlet. The LCM testing cell includes a disk member that is removable positioned in the fluid flow pathway between the inlet and the outlet of the LCM testing cell. The disk member includes a disk base and a plurality of downstream-directed extensions, which combined define a plurality of flow openings. A method of evaluating a loss circulation material (LCM) includes introducing a LCM testing fluid into the LCM testing cell and detecting an amount of LCM testing fluid traversing the LCM test cell.

Embodiments of a method for plugging and abandoning a wellbore may include introducing a sealing composition into a wellbore and curing the sealing composition to form a plug. The sealing composition may include from 1 weight percent to 20 weight percent of a curing agent, based on the total weight of the composition, and from 20 weight percent to 97 weight percent of an epoxy resin system, based on the total weight of the composition. The epoxy resin system may include an epoxy resin having the formula (OCH)&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O&#x2014;R&#x2014;O&#x2014;CH&#x2014;(CHO), where Ris a linear or branched hydrocarbyl having from 4 to 24 carbon atoms; and a reactive diluent having the formula R&#x2014;O&#x2014;CH&#x2014;(CHO), where R is a hydrocarbyl having from 12 to 14 carbon atoms.
