Novel iron chelators exhibiting neuroprotective and good transport properties are useful in iron chelation therapy for treatment of a disease, disorder or condition associated with iron overload and oxidative stress, e.g., a neurodegenerative or cerebrovascular disease or disorder, a neoplastic disease, hemochromatosis, thalassemia, a cardiovascular disease, diabetes, an inflammatory disorder, anthracycline cardiotoxicity, a viral infection, a protozoal infection, a yeast infection, retarding aging, and prevention and/or treatment of skin aging and skin protection against sunlight and/or UV light. The iron chelator function is provided by a 8-hydroxyquinoline, a hydroxypyridinone or a hydroxamate moiety. The neuroprotective function is imparted to the compound, e.g., by a neuroprotective peptide. A combined antiapoptotic and neuroprotective function is provided by a propargyl group.

A delivery system and method for targeting a contrast agent to tissues and organs for improved diagnosis of tumors and for prognosis and follow-up of cancer therapy by X-ray imaging. The delivery system includes a conjugate or complex of a macromolecular carrier and a contrast agent selected from the group consisting of: (a) a compound having a heavy element with an atomic number in the range of 75 to 92, and (b) a compound having an element with a property of an abrupt change in its X-ray attenuation coefficient within the energy range used for radiography, said macromolecular carrier of said conjugate or complex being optionally linked to a specific tissue marker molecule.

A supported, mechanically stable bipolar membrane for electrodialysis having a cation-exchange layer on one side and an anion-exchange layer on the other side of a single sheet of woven fabric. The cation exchange layer is heterogeneous, the anion exchange layer is homogeneous and the two are interlocked. A process of making such bipolar membranes is described. The bipolar membrane may be fabricated into electrodialysis cells in which two membranes are joined along their edges.

The present invention is a method to produce novel composites based on microcapsules or microspheres embedded in contiuous polymeric matrices. Both non-bioerodible and erodible polymers can be used. Material can be incorporated into the microcapsules or microspheres for subsequent release. In one embodiment of the present invention, spheres are homogeneously dispersed in a polymer matrix and then forced to release their contents by exposure to temperature, light or ultrasound. Alternatively, polymers which degrade as a function of time or hydrolysis can be used for controlled releases. The polymer composites have completely different properties from either a continuous polymer matrix or microcapsules or microspheres and are therefore useful for a wide variety of applications. When carbon tetrachloride is the incorporated material, the film is useful as a flame retarding device. There are provided bifunctional chelating agents, which are analogues of EDTA, conjugates of same with a variety of haptens and conjugates of such conjugates with haptens with certain metals, forming metal complexes. The metal complexes have a variety of uses, among these various assays for the determination of haptens and macromolecules. There is also provided a process for the production of the above. There are provided radioimmunoassays based on the above conjugates with metal cations.

Metal complexing polymers

Extraction agents for the extraction of copper, zinc, uranium and nickel, or any of these, from aqueous solutions containing same, comprise a macroporous polymer supporting a specific extractant for such metal, the polymer being rendered hydrophilic by the method of impregnation or by attachment thereon of suitable functional groups, or by attaching such functional groups to the extraction agent, or by coabsorbing on said polymer an agent adapted to render the polymer hydrophilic. Such extraction agents may be produced by impregnating a macroporous polystyrene with a specific metal extraction agent in the presence of a diluent for the extraction agent, removing external diluent, contacting the product with a solution of the metal to be extracted, and removing the metal from the extraction agent by a suitable eluting agent. Alternatively, a macroporous polymer may be impregnated with a selective extraction agent complexed with the metal to be extracted in the presence of a diluent, the external diluent removed and the metal eluted with a suitable eluent. Furthermore, macroporous polymers containing finely dispersed metal powders may be prepared, which polymers can be used as catalyst in organic synthesis.
