This invention provides a method for treating a condition associated with oxidative stress in a subject which comprises administering to the subject an amount of a heme-peptide effective to treat the condition associated with oxidative stress in the subject. The subject may be a mammal. The mammal may be a human being. The condition associated with oxidative stress may be an inflammatory condition, an allergic condition or an auto-immune condition.

The present invention provides compounds having glutathione peroxidase activity and, therefore, are effective glutathione peroxidase replacements. These compounds are useful as drugs for the prevention of cataracts and as anti-oxidants for H.sub.2 O.sub.2 and other peroxides. The present invention also provides methods and pharmaceutical compositions of the compound.

The subject invention concerns a process for the prevention and reversal of cataracts. Specifically, the invention comprises the treatment of the eye lens with an effective cataract inhibiting amount of thioredoxin or thioredoxin-derived, or thioredoxin-like, dithiol peptide, alone, or in combination with a thioredoxin reductase regenerating system. The thioredoxin compound can be administered topically to a patient in need of such treatment on a daily basis over an extended period of time via known delivery techniques such as eye drops and ocular inserts.
