The present invention relates to a compound having the general Formula (I): 

A delivery system and method for targeting a contrast agent to tissues and organs for improved diagnosis of tumors and for prognosis and follow-up of cancer therapy by X-ray imaging. The delivery system includes a conjugate or complex of a macromolecular carrier and a contrast agent selected from the group consisting of: (a) a compound having a heavy element with an atomic number in the range of 75 to 92, and (b) a compound having an element with a property of an abrupt change in its X-ray attenuation coefficient within the energy range used for radiography, said macromolecular carrier of said conjugate or complex being optionally linked to a specific tissue marker molecule.

The functional group that serves as a sensor may be a group suitable for binding and detection of metal ions such as Cu , Fe and Ru such as radicals derived from hydroxamic acids, bipyridyl, imidazol and hydroxyquinoline, or a group that is an efficient light absorber at a given wavelength and is suitable for detection of light such as radicals derived from aliphatic or aromatic hydroxamates, substituted aromatic groups such as cyanobenzoyl and methoxybenzoyl, bipyridyl, hydroxyquinoline, or imidazolyl groups to which a metal porphyrin or a metal phtalocyanin residue is attached.

There are provided novel enterobactin type compounds. There is provided a novel process for the production of enterobactin, and of novel enterobactin type compounds which process is based on the reaction of a serine derivative with a stannoxane of the [BU.sub.2 Sn(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)] type. Enterobactin is a known compound of known utility. The novel derivatives are valuable as sequestering agents for iron and other transition metals, for the separation and analysis of same. They can be used as active ingredients in pharmaceutical compositions for the removal of such metals accumulated above an acceptable level in patients.

The present invention relates to novel macrocyclic carbonyl compounds of the macrocyclic carbamate and lactone type, to chiral macrocyclic structures, to macrocyclic urea compounds and to macrocyclic thiolactones and to a process for the preparation of same. The process of the invention comprises reacting a stannoxane, silazane or silathiane compound with an activated carbonyl compound in an organic solvent at moderate temperature.
