The invention relates to a surface treatment for a carbon surface. A carbon-rich silicon carbide layer is applied over the carbon surface. The ratio of silicon to carbon in the carbon-rich layer varies from zero at the carbon surface interface to greater than zero and preferably 0.3 to 0.5 on the surface of the carbon-rich layer remote from the interface. A preferred method of making the silicon carbide layer is also presented.

Surface treatment for carbon and product

Apparatus is presented for slicing a large round bale into two or more parts prior to discharge from the baler. Slicing is accomplished by inserting a knife blade into the bale-forming chamber during or subsequent to the tying-off event while the bale rotates. The cutting means is inserted into the sidewalls of the baler and into the baling chamber. As the bale is rotated, the cutting means cuts the bale. Typically, a ring and core are formed. The preferred configurations of the core are cylinders or conical structures.

Apparatus to slice a large round bale

An abrasive device is defined by a honeycomb or cellular structure which is configured to define the grinding device. The cells of the cellular structure are filled with the normal constituents that make up a grinding wheel such as abrasive grains, a bonding matrix such as an organic resin, and fillers. The bonding matrix acts to bond the abrasive grains together into a uniform mass. The bonding medium is also designed to bond the abrasive and fillers to the walls of the cellular structure.

Reinforced grinding device

This disclosure is directed to an apparatus and method for highly concentrating an already relatively concentrated feed stream in a two-stage freeze-crystallization system. The feed stream is introduced into the first stage freezer-crystallizer without prior dilution, which has heretofore been customary. Highly concentrated output is withdrawn from a first stage wash column. Diluted concentrate is recirculated in the second stage of the system. This relatively simple expedient of diluting in the second stage, rather than in the first, allows the system to treat highly contaminated feed streams directly and produces significant savings in energy for the same throughput.
