Solar energy is collected by an array of parallel trough-like reflectors of paraboloidal cross-section, and concentrated upon radiation-absorbent pipes positioned along the lines of focus of the reflectors. The array is mounted on a boat which floats on an irrigation pond of a farm and is rotated by a clock-like drive mechanism so as to follow or track the daily east-west motion of the sun, thereby maintaining the concentration of solar radiation upon the pipes. The flotation of the array by means of the boat permits the use of very low drive power for rotating it to track the sun, and also shields the underlying water from the air and sun so as to reduce evaporation thereof. A central column stabilizes the position of the boat with respect to lateral drift or angular tilt, while permitting vertical motion of the boat in response to changes in pond level; the array may therefor be protected from heavy wind by dropping the pond level so that the array is protected by the sidewalls of the pond at such times. A rotating joint arrangement permits circulation of a heat-absorbent fluid such as water (steam) between the radiation-absorbent pipes and a location adjacent the pond where the developed heat is utilized.

Apparatus for the collection and conversion of solar energy

A solar radiation energy collecting system for receiving the sun's rays and focusing them upon a central absorber. A plurality of plane mirrors are mounted in a circular array concentric with a vertical absorber tower, the azimuth angle of each of the mirrors being fixed in the array at the particular angle necessary for it to reflect rays from the sun upon the absorber tower. The mirror array is mounted upon a boat floating on a pond and the boat and mirror array rotated in synchronism with the daily apparent motion of the sun, so as to maintain the desired focusing of reflected solar radiation upon the absorber tower. In one simple embodiment the mirrors are rotated only in a horizontal plane about the vertical axis of the absorber tower, and the varying elevation angles of the sun cause the reflected solar energy to scan up and down along the length of the absorber tower as the sun moves from east to west each day. The absorber tower preferably comprises conduits for delivering fluid to be heated into parts of the tower impinged by the reflected solar radiation energy, and for removing the heated fluid from the tower to a location at which the absorbed heat energy is to be utilized. In some cases the part of the boat not occupied by the above-identified mirrors may be substantially covered with horizontal trough-like reflectors having heat absorbing members disposed along their respective aligned foci, so as to obtain useful solar energy collection from this latter portion of the rotating boat assembly. In other cases the plane-mirror array may be continued around the entire circumference of the boat, especially where the apparatus is utilized in positions near the equator.

System for solar radiation energy collection and conversion

An anti-missile missile employing an accelerator of the Van de Graaff or linear type which is carried by the missile to propel particles, such as gamma aluminum oxide, at hypervelocities, the particles being as small as about 10.sup.-7 cm in diameter.

A hypervelocity ammunition round in which a fin stabilized artillery projile contains a plurality of subcaliber gun tubes for launching subcaliber fin stabilized flechette projectiles from the artillery projectile at a predetermined point in its trajectory, as the artillery projectile performs as a moving gun platform to more effectively defeat a multiplicity of targets through the kinetic energy impact of the subcaliber projectiles. The round utilizes a traveling charge arrangement in launching both the artillery projectile and each of the subcaliber projectiles.

Ammunition

A hypervelocity ammunition round in which a spin stabilized artillery projectile contains a plurality of subcaliber gun tubes for launching subcaliber spin stabilized projectiles from the artillery projectile at a predetermined point in its trajectory, as the artillery projectile performs as a moving gun platform to more effectively defeat a multiplicity of targets through the kinetic energy impact of the subcaliber projectiles.
