The present invention provides a system and a method for managing occlusions and reducing eye tissue damage during phacoemulsification surgery. More specifically, the present invention provides automated control of the application of ultrasonic energy to a partial or full occlusion of a surgical tool. The present invention measures the vacuum pressure and automatically adjusts the application of ultrasonic energy when the vacuum pressure indicates an occlusion or an occlusion break.

Systems and methods for automated phacoemulsification

The present invention provides a system for managing occlusions during phacoemulsification surgery. A system apparatus and method for determining fluid depletion in a surgical system. A surgical system may include a surgical console, display, a processor operatively coupled to the surgical console, and a surgical cassette in fluid communication with an irrigation source and an aspiration line. Certain techniques involve the processor determining a volume of fluid in the irrigation source. The processor may be configured to receive sensed measurements regarding a rate of fluid flow over time from the irrigation source, process the rate of fluid flow relative to the determined volume and produce a first signal for the display to indicate a remaining capacity of the volume of fluid. Warnings and/or alarms may be triggered if fluid volume falls below a predetermined threshold.

The present invention pertains to programming a foot pedal and switches located therewith that is used with a medical device and/or medical device system. A user may select any switch or directional movement available on the foot pedal for programming by activating the switch and/or moving a treadle located on the foot pedal or by selecting a foot pedal feature on a display. The programming options available for the selected switch or directional movement are displayed on the display screen. Using the foot pedal, the display screen, voice command or combinations thereof, the user can navigate through different options to select one or more options and confirm the chosen option(s) for the particular switch or directional movement. The control and feel of the movement of the treadle and/or switch provides the user with the ability to program custom settings that suit the user's foot position(s) and/or particular style of surgery.

Method for programming foot pedal settings and controlling performance through foot pedal variation

A foot pedal with a treadle that pivots up and down to vary its pitch, and/or side to side to vary its yaw. The pivot range of motion is divided into a plurality of zones, each zone configured to correspond to a respective virtual switch. When the treadle is pivoted into one of the zones, the corresponding virtual switch is activated. The virtual switch controls an operatively coupled device such as a handpiece used in a surgical procedure.
