A vacuum system for removal of debris in the form of shavings, particles, or the like has been developed for use inside of a cryostat to evacuate and collect such material as it is generated during specimen preparation using a microtome, also inside of the cryostat. The system includes a vacuum assembly unit containing a vacuum collection nozzle having a suction duct. The cold assembly unit is moveably positioned adjacent to the microtome knife so that debris is suctioned away and removed concurrent with or immediately after its production during cryotomy, and is captured in a cold primary filter. The frozen debris does not melt, but remains rigid while it freeze-dries and is trapped on the filter as cold air flows over and through it, thereby maintaining the collected waste material in a very porous state. This porosity permits the collection of a large volume of debris without clogging the cold filter, in contrast to the rapid clogging which occurs when such frozen debris melts, is suctioned into, collapses within, dries and seals off the pores of a warm filter. When required, the collection nozzle and attached assembly unit can be moveably positioned out of the way of the microtome knife. The system may also include a second bacteriological filter inside or outside of the cryostat to entrap any small quantities of fine debris which may pass through the primary filter after suctioning. When necessary, both types of filters can be efficiently, economically, and safely replaced and discarded.

Vacuum system for cryostats

A method for labelling a histological specimen, wherein such specimen is embedded in a paraffin block along with an integral set of supported elongated elements identifying such specimen for subsequent sectioning on a microtome. The identification elements are sectioned concurrently with the specimen, so as to form an integral part of the section.

Method for histology specimen labelling

A method of transferring a substance adhering to the surface of a substrate to a receiving surface of a backing element which includes locating the substrate surface in juxtaposition with the receiving surface, supplying a transfer medium on the receiving surface in sufficient quantity to encapsulate the substance, joining the transfer medium on the backing element with a substance so as to encapsulate the substance within the transfer medium and removing the substrate to expose the encapsulated substance.

Apparatus for transferring a plurality of smears

A sampler is provided having a liquid sampling probe. A drive mechanism for the probe includes a screw element and a nut element threaded thereon, one of which elements is axially fixed and driven to axially raise and lower the other element which supports the probe. In one axial position of the element supporting the probe, the last-mentioned element is moved between first and second angular positions thereof.

Liquid sampler

A multichamber cuvette for maintaining in independent and separate condition at least two reactants, one of which may be a sample, until such time that it is desired to mix them for reaction with each other for photometric analysis in the cuvette. At least one of the chambers has a pair of optical quality windows aligned with one another for analysis of the then liquid contents extending between the windows. The cuvette body is of upright construction, defining at least two such chambers laterally of one another, open at the top for filling separately or simultaneously, and interconnected adjacent their lower extremities by a passageway of inverted U shape. The passageway is of an effective height exceeding the highest filling level of each chamber by a distance at least as great as any capillary rise in the passageway beyond such level of the particular liquid in that chamber. Accidental mixing of the chamber contents is prevented by entrapment of air in the passageway by the respective liquids in the chambers and partially filling the legs of the passageway. Mixing through the passageway is effected by the forced flow of fluids therethrough from one chamber to the other while one of the chambers is vented to the atmosphere at the top. The passageway is so configured and also dimensioned in cross section as to allow for the free flow of liquid between the chambers.

Cuvette

An aspirating probe which has a travel from a lower position in which it is immersed in a liquid in a receptacle to an upper position in which it clears the receptacle, carrying with it in its movement to the upper position a washing device to wash the interior and exterior thereof when in the last-mentioned position.
