A flexible belt assembly is prepared by positioning an edge of a belt-shaped substrate in proximity to a metal filled gasket within a groove of a support flange. An electromagnetic force is applied to the gasket to soften the metal to cause conforming of the shape of the gasket to the edge and to the groove. The flexible belt assembly is disassembled by applying a magnetic force to loosen the conforming compression fit.

A method of fabricating a cylindrical device comprising having at least one distinct outer layer comprising providing a preformed rigid cylindrical support drum having a predetermined outer circumference, a first end and a second end, providing a flexible belt having an inner circumference at least about 0.05 percent smaller than the outer circumference of the support drum, circumferentially expanding the belt with a flowing fluid under pressure until the circumference of the inner surface of the belt adjacent the first end is stretched to a new dimension at least about 0.1 percent greater than the outer circumference of the support drum while maintaining an elongation strain less than the elastic limit of the belt, sliding the belt onto the support drum from the first end toward the second end of the support drum until substantially all of the belt encircles the outer surface of the support drum and terminating the flow of the flowing liquid to allow the belt to contract onto the outer surface of the support drum. The fluid may either be a gas or a liquid. The cylindrical device fabricated by this process is preferably an electrostatographic imaging member. This electrostatographic imaging member may be utilized in an electrostatographic imaging process.

An improvement for a container disposed in a printing machine is disclosed. The container is adapted to dispense toner and capable of maintaining a quantity of toner therein. The improvement includes a sensor for sensing that the quantity of toner in the container is less than or equal to a predetermined quantity. The sensor is located in and isolated from the container by an isolating arrangement, the isolating arrangement preventing forces applied to the container from being transmitted to the sensor. In the preferred embodiment, the isolating arrangement includes a mechanism for damping movement of the sensor with respect to the container to decouple substantially the sensor from the container.

Simulated photographic prints are created using xerographic imaging. A transparent carrier having a xerographically formed mirror image fused thereto is bonded to a plastic substrate through the use of heat and pressure. The transparent carrier and the plastic substrate form the finished print.

A method of sizing a sleeve of electrically conductive material includes the steps of inserting the sleeve in a die having a seamless inner surface, positioning a magnetic coil inside the sleeve in the die, and sealing the die after the insertion of the sleeve and the positioning of the magnetic coil. A vacuum is created inside the die to avoid air pockets between the outer surface of the sleeve and the inner surface of the die and the magnetic coil is energized to create a magnetic field to expand the sleeve against the inner surface of the die. The process may also be used to form a composite sleeve having an outer layer of material unresponsive to the magnetic field and an inner layer of electrically conductive material.

An electroforming process is used to prepare a thin, deformable metal member by immersing an electrode having an outer surface with an undulating cross-section of hill-like and valley-like shapes in an electroforming bath. The hill-like shapes are narrower than the valley-like shapes, and, in a preferred embodiment, the bottoms of the valley-like shapes are electroformed to be thinner than the tops of the hill-like shapes. The metal member is useful as a spring in a fluid bearing such as an air bearing.

A backup roller assembly having a plurality of rollers for applying pressure to an inside surface of a photoreceptor web, and a process for making such backup rollers is disclosed wherein a thin walled tube is extruded from a metallic or polymeric material. After extrusion, the tubing is cut to a desired length and filled with a filler, preferably a urethane foam for providing support for the thin-walled tubing, for the adhesion of journals at each end of the tube and for grounding the photoreceptor web. After the journals are attached at each end of the tubing by the adhesion of the foam, the backup roller can be ground to a precise outer diameter. In a final step, the journals are machined to the proper specifications.

An apparatus is provided for fusing marking particles onto a support member. One preferred embodiment of the fusing apparatus includes a journal member, the journal member including a shaft and a base with the shaft and the base being coupled. The fuser apparatus further includes a roller member having opposing ends, the roller member defining a shoulder near an end of the roller member. A retaining member is provided for retaining the base adjacent the shoulder so that at least a portion of the base is in substantial contact with the shoulder. Additionally, a heating device is provided to fuse the marking particles onto the support member when the support member with marking particles is brought into contact with the rolling member.
