Both fixed and removable functional appliances are disclosed employing magnets to provide the requisite force for accomplishing Class II malocclusion correction. Magnets are employed buccally and/or lingually, either operating in sliding or shearing mode or with the inter-pole gap inclined mesio-distally to develop an effective horizontal force component. Long thin rectangular magnets are incorporated bilaterally and inclined mesio-distally in the tooth capping sections of functional type base structures overlying the occlusal surface. Curved or angled straight magnets are located in anterior flanges of functional type base structures for developing horizontal thrust on the mandible. A number of closed magnetic circuits using either low reluctance keepers or shaped magnets are described for providing either increased force or travel or both.

Magnetic force functional orthodontic appliances

A kit is provided containing magnetic modules, attachment wire and a set of gages. The modules are rectangular prismatic formed from a cobalt-samarium alloy, covered with a chlorinated poly-p-xylene coating or stainless steel and jacketed in stainless steel with orthogonally related passages on opposite sides having rectangular cross-sections for receiving with a snug fit the rectangular cross-section attachment wire formed by welding together two lengths of standard edgewise wire. The gages provide means for spacing the modules when the latter are incorporated in an appliance. Appliances are illustrated for accomplishing a variety of orthodontic procedures. The construction of the modules and attachment wire permits construction of appliances where the modules are constrained in the jaw closed in centric condition to translate parallel to their respective pole faces in a 'sliding' fashion.

Magnetic force orthodontic kit and appliances constructed therefrom

A palatal body is custom configured and dimensioned to fit within the oral cavity with an outer edge conforming to and engaging the lingual faces of the teeth of the maxillary arch. The dimensions are chosen to retain the arch either in an expanded condition associated with separation of the mid-palatal suture, or in some other predetermined position following suitable prior treatment of a cleft palate patient. A plurality of diametrally or longitudinally polarized cylindrical magnets are arrayed in parallel and in parallel to the palate body, all oriented with their axes in the bucco-lingual direction, and individually mounted for rotation under the influence of intraoral activity for inducing therapeutic levels of voltage and current in the adjacent bone structure of the natural palate on either side of the palatal gap.

Palatal retention device

The invention contemplates a body-mounted fixture for supporting a source of magnetic flux in position as appropriate to coact with intra-oral magnet structure, to non-invasively achieve orthodontic and/or periodontic therapy. In coaction with an intra-oral magnet, the extra-orally mounted source of magnetic flux establishes an orthodontic-force environment (with a range of resultant-force magnitudes and directions), and/or a therapeutically beneficial environment for a selected region of tooth and alveolar bone requiring osteogenesis and soft-tissue repair.

Integrated oral magnetic osteogenic appliances

The invention contemplates configurations of permanently magnetized magnetic elements adapted for fixation to different teeth for so torsionally reacting with each other as to apply continuous unidirectional torque as needed for particular orthodontic applications. The magnetic reaction responsible for such torque development is also instrumental in providing an environment for concurrent development of osteogenesis and soft-tissue repair, in aid of the orthodontic displacement process.

The invention contemplates an orthodontic palatal expansion device wherein separate palate-body halves are attachable to adjacent maxillary teeth and incorporate permanent magnets arranged in a repulsion mode and mounted in such a way as to apply force needed to split the mid-palatal suture. The reacting fields of these magnets also aid in reorganization of the tissues to insure maintenance of the expansion and to accelerate osteogenesis. The device may be constructed for fixation to the patient, as via orthodontic bands, or it may be fashioned with orthodontic wires that permit selective removal and replacement by the patient.

Palatal expansion device

The invention contemplates a unitary intra-oral positioning fixture for use in orthodontic and/or periodontal therapy and bone augmentation. The fixture provides compliant support for two coacting sources of magnetic flux, respectively positioned on the lingual and buccal sides of a region of a tooth or teeth (and adjacent alveolar bone) requiring osteogenesis and soft-tissue repair.

Various types of magnetic or electromagnetic appliances attached intra-orally or extra-orally are used to produce osteogenesis and soft tissue repair in the practice of periodontics and orthodontics. Simultaneously, these innovative magnetic modules generate force fields that produce corrective tooth movement.
