Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for designing lattice structures for heat dissipating devices include a method including: obtaining a 3D model of a device that passes a fluid through an internal structure of the device, including a lattice for the internal structure; performing computational fluid dynamics simulation using the 3D model to generate fluid turbulence data that indicates fluid flows through the lattice for the internal structure; modifying a first density in accordance with the fluid turbulence data; performing computational structural simulation using the 3D model and defined loading condition(s) for the device to generate structural integrity data that indicates a structural weakness of the device; modifying a second density in accordance with the structural integrity data; and providing the 3D model of the device, the 3D model including the modified first density and the modified second density.

Designing lattice structures for heat dissipation devices

A design engine consolidates portions of a mechanical assembly design to reduce the number of components included in the design. The design engine analyzes the design to determine various criteria associated with the assembly. Then, the design engine identifies a group of components within the design to be consolidated. The design engine determines a volumetric region where the group of components resides and then subdivides the volumetric region. The design engine then initiates a generative design process based on the determined criteria to create geometry within each subdivision of the volumetric region. The newly generated geometry includes fewer components than the initial group of components. The design engine then replaces the group of components with the newly generated geometry, thereby consolidating the group and reducing the total number of components included in the design.

Simplifying designs of mechanical assemblies via generative component consolidation

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for designing and manufacturing conformal cooling molds with lattice structures include, in one aspect, a method including: obtaining temperature and pressure data for a 3D model of a conformal cooling mold from computer simulation of injection molding; replacing a volume of the 3D model with a lattice structure to reduce the mass of the mold; adjusting a number of lattice unit cells for the lattice structure in accordance with the temperature data to increase heat conduction from hotter areas of the mold; adjusting thickness(es) of beams forming the lattice structure in accordance with the pressure data to prevent structural failure of the mold; and providing an updated version of the 3D model of the conformal cooling mold that incorporates the lattice structure after adjustment of the number of lattice unit cells and the thickness(es) of beams forming the lattice structure.

Conformal cooling molds with lattice structures for injection molding

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for designing and manufacturing rotors for disc brake systems and apparatus include, in one aspect, a method including: placing a lattice structure in a ventilation space within a 3D model to create more internal surface area within a disc brake rotor between inner and outer rotor discs; adjusting a number of lattice unit cells for the lattice structure in different regions of the 3D model between the rotor discs to increase air turbulence in the ventilation space; adjusting one or more thicknesses of beams forming the lattice structure in different regions of the 3D model between the rotor discs to prevent structural failure under predefined loading conditions; and providing an updated version of the 3D model of the disc brake rotor that incorporates the lattice structure after adjustment of the number of lattice unit cells and the beam thickness(es).
