Techniques are provided for performing a resync transfer to recover from a storage site failure. During normal operation of a first site hosting a first volume, data is replicated to a second volume hosted by a second site. If the first site fails, when clients are redirected to the second volume at the second site. When the first site recovers, data modifications made to the second volume are resynced back to the first volume. As part of synchronizing the first volume, a data warehouse is rebuilt at the first site in order to track the location of blocks present on the replication destination. Typically, the data modifications are transferred after the data warehouse is rebuilt, which results in significantly long resync times. The techniques provided herein decrease the resync time by either rebuilding the data warehouse in parallel with resyncing the data modifications or circumvent the need for rebuild.

Resync transfer for recovering from storage site failure utilizing background pull operations

Techniques are provided for backing up virtual machines from a computing environment to a storage environment. A virtual machine agent is utilized to generate a snapshot of the virtual machine. Metadata comprising a snapshot identifier of the snapshot and virtual disk information of virtual disks captured by snapshot is generated at the computing environment. The metadata is retrieved and used to create a metafile that is transferred to the storage environment within which snapshots of the virtual machine are to be stored. The snapshot is retrieved from the computing environment and is packaged into a snapshot package having a protocol format used by the storage environment. The snapshot package is transferred to the storage environment.

Techniques are provided for incrementally restoring a virtual machine hosted by a computing environment. In response to receiving an indication that the virtual machine is to be incrementally restored, a snapshot of the virtual machine may be created while the virtual machine is shut down into an off state. The snapshot is transmitted to a storage environment as a common snapshot. The snapshot and the common snapshot are common snapshots comprising a same representation of the virtual machine. The common snapshot and a prior snapshot of the virtual machine are evaluated to identify a data difference of the virtual machine between the common snapshot and the prior snapshot. An incremental restore is performed of the virtual machine by transmitting the data difference from the storage environment to the computing environment to restore the virtual machine to a state represented by the prior snapshot.

Methods, non-transitory machine readable media, and computing devices that more securely facilitate data protection workflows are disclosed. With this technology, identification information for primary inbound and outbound queues is extracted from a registration token received from an administrator device. A registration request is inserted into the primary outbound queue using the identification information and one or more communication networks that are external to a data center. The primary inbound queue is polled using the identification information and the communication networks to retrieve messages from a backup service computing device that instantiated the queues and generated the registration token. Accordingly, nodes in a data center can communicate more securely with a cloud backup service via queues and without exposing any HTTP ports to the backup service. Advantageously, the backup service can learn the topology of a storage cluster and manage data protection workflows via communications with one of the constituent nodes.

Various embodiments are generally directed an apparatus and method for receiving a recovery point objective for a workload, the recovery point objective comprising an amount of time in which information for the workload will be lost if a failure occurs, and determining a service level objective for a replication transfer based on the recovery point objective, the replication transfer to replicate information on a destination node to maintain the recovery point objective. Various embodiments include dynamically controlling one or more resources to replicate the information on the destination node based on the service level objective and communicating information for the replication transfer from the source node to the destination node.

Various embodiments are generally directed to an apparatus and method to receive client traffic comprising information at a primary cluster of a clustered system over a communications link, perform, a replication operation on the clustered system to replicate the information on a secondary cluster of the clustered system, and determine a client traffic throughput for the client traffic and a replication throughput for the replication operation. In some embodiments, the apparatus and method may include buffering one or more write operations to control the client traffic such that the client traffic throughput is less than or equal to the replication throughput for the replication operation.

Techniques for controlling client traffic on a clustered system

Method and system for managing storage units are provided. A free space module scans a storage unit data structure and a reference data structure to generate an intermediate data structure that identifies storage units that are not referenced by any storage unit client. A lookup module is initiated and the storage unit clients are notified that all new references to any storage unit should be verified with the lookup module. The free space module then verifies if any of the storage units in the intermediate data structure have been referenced since the intermediate data structure was created. Any referenced storage units are removed from the intermediate data structure and a data structure identifying unreferenced storage units is generated. The data structure is then used to allocate the identified storage units.
