An insulating fluid system includes an acidic nanosilica dispersion and an alkaline activator. The acidic nanosilica dispersion includes silica nanoparticles and a stabilizer, such as a carboxylic acid. The alkaline activator includes an alkanolamine, such as a monoalkanolamine. A mixture of the acidic nanosilica dispersion and the alkaline activator forms an insulating fluid having a pH greater than 7 and less than or equal to 12, and the insulating fluid forms an insulating gel when heated to a temperature in a range between 100° F. and 300° F. The insulating gel may be formed in an annulus between an inner conduit and an outer conduit. The inner and outer conduits may be positioned in a subterranean formation. Forming an insulating gel may include combining the acidic nanosilica dispersion with the alkaline activator to yield the insulating fluid, and heating the insulating fluid to form the insulating gel.

Insulating fluid for thermal insulation

Methods for making and using an invert-emulsion drilling fluid, and the invert-emulsion drilling fluid are provided. An exemplary invert-emulsion drilling fluid includes a C-36 dimer diamine dihydrochloride salt (CDDH), an aqueous solvent, a non-aqueous solvent, an emulsifier, and calcium chloride.

A method for mitigating loss circulation zones in a wellbore is provided. The method includes synthesizing a carbamate from an amine-curing agent, and the carbamate is mixed with an epoxy resin from the loss control composition. The loss control composition is pumped into a wellbore with a loss circulation zone, wherein the loss control composition flows into the loss circulation zone. The carbamate of the loss control composition is allowed to decompose at wellbore temperatures, wherein the carbamate releases COgas and the amine-curing agent. The COgas foams the epoxy resin, expanding the epoxy resin to fill voids in the loss circulation zone, and the amine-curing agent cures the foamed epoxy resin, forming a loss control material that seals the loss circulation zone.

Loss circulation material

A drilling fluid composition includes a latex including a first polymer and a second polymer. The first polymer includes polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl acetate. A molar concentration of the polyvinyl alcohol in the first polymer is greater than 80% and less than 100%. The second polymer has a general structure in which x is an overall molar ratio of styrene in the second polymer, y is an overall molar ratio of butadiene in the second polymer, and z is an overall molar ratio of carboxylic acid in the second polymer. A sum of x, y, and z is represented as s. Styrene (x) is in a range of from about 20% to about 30% of s. Butadiene (y) is in a range of from about 70% to about 80% of s. Carboxylic acid (z) is in a range of from about 1% to about 5% of s.

Polymer-based latex for drilling fluids

Methods, systems, and computer-readable medium to perform operations including: obtaining, in real-time from one or more sensors of a drilling system, real-time drilling data of a drilling operation of drilling a wellbore; using the drilling data to calculate a carrying capacity index (CCI) of a drilling fluid and a cutting concentration in an annulus (CCA) of the wellbore; determining that at least one of the CCI and the CCA is outside a respective range; determining a corrective action to adjust the at least one of the CCI and the CCA to be within the respective range; and performing the corrective action.

Methods, systems, and computer-readable medium to perform operations including determining, in real-time, values of drilling parameters of a drilling system drilling a wellbore. The operations further include calculating, based on the values of the drilling parameters, a cuttings concentration in an annulus of the wellbore (CCA). Further, the operations include calculating, based on the calculated CCA and a mud weight (MW) of a drilling fluid, an effective mud weight (MW) of the drilling fluid. Yet further, the operations include calculating, based on the effective mud weight, a slip velocity of the cuttings. In addition, the operations include calculating, based on the slip velocity, a transport ratio (TR) of the cuttings.

Automated real-time transport ratio calculation

A lost-circulation material including a mixture of an aqueous colloidal dispersion and fatty acid. The aqueous colloidal dispersion includes silica nanoparticles and has a pH of at least 8. Combining the colloidal dispersion and the fatty acid initiates gelation of the lost-circulation material when the pH of the lost-circulation material is less than 8 and a temperature of the lost-circulation material is in a range of 5&#xb0; C. to 300&#xb0; C. Sealing an opening in a portion of a wellbore or a portion of a subterranean formation in which the wellbore is formed may include providing the aqueous colloidal dispersion and the fatty acid to the wellbore, mixing the colloidal dispersion and the fatty acid to yield the lost-circulation material, initiating gelation of the lost-circulation material, and solidifying the lost-circulation material in the wellbore to yield a set gel.

Chemical plugs for preventing wellbore treatment fluid losses

Methods, systems, and computer-readable medium to perform operations including: determining, in real-time, values of drilling parameters of a drilling system drilling a wellbore; calculating, based on the values of the drilling parameters, a cuttings concentration in an annulus of the wellbore (CCA); calculating, based on the calculated CCA and a mud weight (MW) of a drilling fluid, an effective mud weight (MW) of the drilling fluid; using the effective mud weight to calculate an equivalent circulating density (ECD) of the drilling fluid; and controlling, based on the equivalent circulating density, a component of the drilling system to adjust at least one of the drilling parameters.
