A process of constructing a micromodel for a multiple porosity system includes: drilling a well; coring the well for acquiring core plugs from the well; producing thin section images of the core plugs for acquiring a first feature of the core plugs; and transforming the thin section images to binary images.

Methods for determining the gelation period of a gel solution are provided. The methods provided include introducing a first inert ball, or first inert hollow ball comprising a polymer solution, into a gel solution container containing a gel solution where upon the first inert ball, or inert hollow ball, reaching a bottom of the gel solution container, at least one subsequent inert ball, or inert hollow ball, is introduced sequentially into the gel solution container until the at least one subsequent inert ball, or inert hollow ball remains fixed in place prior to reaching the bottom of the gel solution container. Methods also include determining the gelation time of the gel solution based on a sum of distances traveled by the first inert ball, or inert hollow ball, and at least one subsequent inert ball, or inert hollow ball.

Stokes-based method to estimate gelation time

A method of evaluating a surfactant is provided. The method includes preparing a first emulsion comprising an aqueous phase, an oleaginous phase, and a first surfactant. Then the method includes determining an average droplet size of oleaginous phase droplets in the first emulsion. The method then includes preparing a second emulsion comprising the aqueous phase, the oleaginous phase, and a second surfactant, and then determining an average droplet size of oleaginous phase droplets in the second emulsion. After determining droplet sizes of both emulsions, the method includes comparing the average droplet size of the of the oleaginous phase droplets in the first emulsion to the average droplet size of the oleaginous phase droplets in the second emulsion, and based on the comparing of the average droplet sizes, determining a relative interfacial tension of the first surfactant as compared to the second surfactant.

Method of evaluating surfactants for enhanced oil recovery

A method for retrieving heavy oil from a reservoir by injection of solvent, hot water, and polymer solution. This method includes the steps of providing an injection well traversing into reservoir containing heavy oil. Sequential injections of solvent, a hot water and polymer solution are performed via the injection well traversing into reservoir containing the heavy oil. The solvent, hot water, and polymer solution intermingle with the heavy oil within the reservoir to form a heavy oil mixture that is retrieved from a production well. The sequential solvent and hot water injection may also be repeated to reduce the viscosity of the heavy oil until an estimated viscosity of the heavy oil in the reservoir is below a threshold viscosity before injecting polymer solution into the reservoir.

Sequential injection of solvent, hot water, and polymer for improving heavy oil recovery

Methods for determining the gelation period of a gel solution are provided. The methods provided include introducing an inert ball into each of a plurality of gel solution containers having a gel solution therein. In the method, the inert balls are then allowed to sink to the bottom of the containers, followed by a step of repeatedly inverting a first gel solution container at specified time intervals until the onset of gelation of the first gel solution is observed. Methods further include repeatedly inverting an additional gel solution container at specified intervals where each of the subsequent gel solution containers containing the inert balls and gel solutions are sequentially inverted in series until the inert ball is observed to remain fixed in place in the solution.

Stuck-ball method to delineate gelation time

A method for selecting a surfactant solution for use in an enhanced oil recovery process may include contacting a surfactant solution with crude oil to produce a crude/surfactant mixture, compressing the interface between the crude oil and the surfactant solution in a Langmuir trough to obtain an interface pressure versus surface area isotherm, calculating an interface compression energy of the interface between the crude oil and the surfactant solution by integrating the interface pressure versus surface area isotherm, and selecting the surfactant solution for use in an enhanced oil recovery process if the interface compression energy of the interface between the crude oil and the surfactant solution is at most 100 Ergs.

Methods for selecting surfactant solutions for use in enhanced oil recovery processes

An oil recovery composition having a brine, a hydrolyzable polymer, and a monovalent cations to divalent cations ration in the range of about 2.5:1 to 3:1 is provided. An oil recovery composition may be formed from a brine recovered from production water and a polymer. A monovalent salt may be added to the brine recovered from production water to form a modified brine and achieve a modified monovalent cations to divalent cations ratio in the range of about 2.5:1 to 3:1. Processes for forming the oil recovery composition and enhanced oil recovery using the oil recovery composition are provided.

An oil recovery composition having a brine, a hydrolyzable polymer, and a monovalent cations to divalent cations ration in the range of about 3:1 to about 4.5:1 is provided. An oil recovery composition may be formed from a brine recovered from production water and a polymer. A monovalent salt may be added to the brine recovered from production water to form a modified brine and achieve a modified monovalent cations to divalent cations ratio in the range of about 3:1 to about 4.5:1. Processes for forming the oil recovery composition and enhanced oil recovery using the oil recovery composition are provided.
