Methods for preventing, inhibiting, or reducing metal (e.g. mild steel) corrosion in aqueous media utilizing a water-soluble formulation having a polyurea pre-dissolved in a polar aprotic solvent are described. The polyurea contains reacted units of a diisocyanate and a diaminoalkane. The effectiveness of the methods is demonstrated by corrosion inhibition efficiency and corrosion rate of metallic substrates in aqueous acidic environments using the water-soluble formulation.

A method of inhibiting corrosion of metal in contact with a corrosive medium in an oil or gas field environment, whereby a formulation containing a polyurea is introduced into the corrosive medium in contact with the metal, wherein the polyurea is formed from a polymerization reaction between a piperazine having at least two reactive amine groups and a diisocyanate. The polyurea is introduced into the corrosive medium at a concentration of 1 to 250 ppm.

Cu(II) detection in the presence of main group heavy metal ions and d-, f- and g-element interferents relies on a colorimetric chelating complex between 3-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde-4-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone (3-HNHBH) and Cu(II). Derivatives and entrapped forms of the probe were aligned with the methods of analysis, featuring spectrophotometric, reflectometric, lateral flow, microfluidic, lab-on-paper, positional array, dynamic array, flow cytometry and tandem stage devices. A remotely operating software capable of DFT calculations predicted the observed detection limit of 0.34 &#x3bc;g L(&#x3c;5 nM) as well as high selectivity towards copper ions in the presence of competing Zn+2 and Ni+2. The probe was readily regenerated against metal complexation by using a 0.5 M HCl solution, indicating its feasibility to be a re-usable sensor for the convenient detection of copper ions in water-organic media. The influence of metal interference, pH and solvents on the selectivity and regeneration of the ligand was incorporated in an algorithm providing decision support to the analyst via smartphone, laptop and other multimedia.

Inhibition of metal corrosion in aqueous media using a polyurea formulation

A rotating sample platform for SERS detection having sample holders for presenting a plurality of samples to a SERS laser at a speed and dwell time related to the Raman spectra. The sample holder may be designed to hold either slides or cuvettes, each of which contains either gold or silver nanoparticles. The sample holder for slides is configured for tilting each slide. The degree of tilt is captured by a wireless read head. A controller is configured to receive the wireless read head signals and the Raman spectra for each sample, correct the speed and dwell time and actuate a motor to rotate the sample platform at the corrected speed and dwell time. The rotating sample platform allows a set of slides or cuvettes in a sample holder to be presented to the SERS detector in a continuous manner, minimizing background corrections and sample adjustment time.
