A file system manager implemented at a provider network identifies a storage device of a first group of storage devices of a provider network as an initial location of a file system object. Based on an access metric associated with the object, the file system manager initiates a transfer of contents of the object to a second storage device of a different storage device group, without receiving a client request specifying the transfer. In response to an access request received via a file system programmatic interface, contents of the object are provided from the second storage device. Based on a second access metric, the object is transferred back to the first group of storage devices.

Techniques are disclosed for locally printing a print job generated by a remote web services platform. It may be that a local computer and an application of the remote web services platform that generates the print job lack a bidirectional communications link (like a VPN connection). A printer service on the web services platform presents itself as a printer to an application on the web services platform. The printer service receives a print job from the application and transmits it to a client-side print service. The client print service then sends the print job to a local printer.

A recommendations manager (RM) of a file system service identifies a file system object group (FSOG) for which proactive placement recommendations are to be generated using statistical analyses. Usage metrics collected from the FSOG are used to train a model. Predictions obtained from the model are used to generate a recommendation to transfer a file system object proactively from one storage device group of the service to another. The recommendations are provided to an object migrator of the service to initiate the transfer.

Proactive optimizations at multi-tier file systems

Systems and methods are described for accurately determining which of a set of networked computing environments most closely approximates a target computing environment. The determination is based on executing a reference workload in the target computing environment and calculating a coefficient of equivalency for each of the networked computing environments, which relates the performance of one or more computing resources in the target computing environment to the corresponding resources in the networked computing environments. The coefficient of equivalency may further be used to determine which of a set of networked computing environments will provide a target level of performance when executing the workload. The target computing environment may be assessed in terms of time, cost, percentage of capacity utilized, or other criteria.

Assessing performance of networked computing environments

Techniques for using an aerial vehicle to provide a data service are provided. For example, information about a request for the data service is accessed. The request is sent to a provider computing device and identifies a user computing device to receive the data service. The provider computing device is configured to provide the data service. A location associated with providing the data service is determined based on the request. The aerial vehicle is flown to the location. The aerial vehicle includes a computing system configured to provide a portion of the data service. Based on detecting that the aerial vehicle is within a range of the location, the aerial vehicle provides the portion of the data service to the user computing device by using, for example, the computing system.

Systems and methods are described for accurately determining the performance of a networked computing environment relative to the predicted performance of a target computing environment. The computing environment performance for a particular workload are related to each other by determining a coefficient of equivalency. The coefficient of equivalency may be determined based on the time, cost, or other criteria associated with executing the workload, and may be determined by assessing the relative performance of various computing resources (such as central processing units and computer-readable media) in the respective environments and assessing the demand placed upon these resources by the particular workload. The coefficient of equivalency may further be determined based in part on capacity limitations and substitutions of one computing resource for another in the respective computing environments.

Assessing performance of disparate computing environments

Technology for capturing a configuration of an infrastructure to enable replication of the infrastructure is provided. In one example, a layout agent may be provided for deployment to an infrastructure, including a server, together with instructions for the layout agent to capture server layout data for the server and to communicate the server layout data to a replication application. The server layout data for the server may be received at the replication application. A system model for the infrastructure may be generated based on the server layout data from the layout agent. The replication of the infrastructure as a replicated infrastructure may be initiated based on the system model.

Techniques are disclosed for selectively pausing and resuming the 3D printing of an object. In embodiments, a request to pause 3D printing is received. A 3D printer may evaluate a material being used to print the object, a process being used to print the object, a current point in the process of 3D printing the object, and other factors, and determine whether to permit pausing the 3D printing process based on this information.

Techniques are described for allocating computing storage capacity to customers of a provider network. Storage capacity that is allocated to a customer is backed up with a replica of the allocated storage capacity. A request is received for a copy of contents of the allocated storage capacity. Responsive to the indication, the requested copy is provided and is configured to reference the replica when the requested copy is accessed.
