A simple, one-step method for producing a homogenous CeO—TiOcomposite thin film using aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition ('CVD') of a solution containing triacetatocerium (III) and tetra isopropoxytitanium (IV) on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (“FTO”) substrate at a temperature ranging from about 500 to about 650° C. Methods for using the film produced by this method.

A CoVOcomposite electrode and method of making is described. The composite electrode comprises a substrate with an average 0.5-5 μm thick layer of CoVOhaving pores with average diameters of 2-200 nm. The method of making the composite electrode involves contacting the substrate with an aerosol comprising a solvent, a cobalt complex, and a vanadium complex. The CoVOcomposite electrode is capable of being used in an electrochemical cell for water oxidation.

A CaTiO&#x2014;TiOcomposite electrode and method of making is described. The composite electrode comprises a substrate with an average 2-12 &#x3bc;m thick layer of CaTiO&#x2014;TiOcomposite particles having average diameters of 0.2-2.2 &#x3bc;m. The method of making the composite electrode involves contacting the substrate with an aerosol comprising a solvent, a calcium complex, and a titanium complex. The CaTiO&#x2014;TiOcomposite electrode is capable of being used in a photoelectrochemical cell for water splitting.

Platinum films can be obtained by aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) using one or more Pt-dialkyldithiocarbamate complexes of formula Pt(SCNR), wherein R is independently alkyl, aryl, or alkaryl, particularly as single source precursors. Such methods may include heating a substrate to a deposition temperature above 150&#xb0; C. in a reactor; and introducing into the reactor, at the deposition temperature, an aerosol including a platinum dithiocarbamate compound, salt, and/or solvate thereof, to thereby deposit the platinum layer on the substrate. The Pt(SCNR)-derived films have well-connected and defect-free surface topography and better catalytic performance, likely due to their high conductivity and reflectivity.

Fabrication, characterization and photoelectrochemical properties of CeO-TiOthin film electrodes

A thin film electrode involving a nanostructured catalytic material deposited onto a surface of a conducting substrate and method of making is described. The nanostructured catalytic material contains cobalt oxide nanoflowers having a central core and nanopetals extending from the central core. The method of making the thin film electrode involves contacting the conducting substrate with an aerosol containing a cobalt complex and a solvent. A method of using the thin film electrode in an electrochemical cell for water splitting is also provided.

In a method for monitoring cell-to-cell interactions, a quartz crystal microbalance surface is exposed to a medium including a first cell. The first cell is exposed to a sample including a suspect cell. The first cell is activated prior to or simultaneously with the first cell exposure. Frequency and motional resistance changes versus time are measured after each of: surface exposure to the medium, first cell activation prior to the exposure to the sample, and first cell exposure to the sample; or after each of: surface exposure to the medium and simultaneous first cell activation and sample exposure. From the frequency and motional resistance changes versus time, any of i) a level of adhesion of the suspect cell to the activated first cell, ii) a type of the suspect cell, iii) a behavior or activity of the suspect cell is determined, or iv) activation of the first cell is determined.
