The invention provides a controller for determining the presence of faults within a fuel injection system of an engine system. The engine system comprises a first injector and at least one further injector, each injector comprising a needle control valve and a pressure control valve. The controller comprises: inputs for receiving data relating to a first engine system parameter; outputs for outputting a control function for controlling the injector valves of each of the injectors, and; a processor for controlling the control function output from the controller. The processor is arranged to output a control function such that the needle control valve of the first injector is kept closed in order to prevent injection from the first injector and to monitor the first engine system parameter as the needle control valve is kept closed, a change in the first engine system parameter indicating that the first injector is operating substantially within normal operating parameters and no or substantially no change in the first engine system parameter indicating that the first injector is faulty.

Controller and control method for an engine control unit

A method for controlling operation of an electronic control unit for use in an internal combustion engine, the electronic control unit being used to control different engine modes, the method including providing a function mode map having a plurality of data map points wherein the function mode map is divided into at least a first type region containing data map points representing mode map output values only of a first mode type and a second type region containing data map points representing mode map output values only of a second mode type; and providing at least one further data map having a plurality of further data map points, each of the further map points representing a further data map output value. The method also includes determining a current mode for an operating point on an operating path within the function mode map in dependence upon first and second engine operating parameters and determining a control function for the electronic control unit based on the current mode of the operating point and at least one further data map output value determined from the at least one further data map.

A control method for controlling the timing of fuel injection in a fuelling system for an engine comprising a fuel injector supplied with fuel from a source of fuel at high pressure, comprises varying a drive current which is supplied to the fuel injector at a first time so as to initiate or terminate a primary injection of fuel and monitoring the pressure of fuel within the source so as to detect when a variation in fuel pressure occurs. A time delay is measured, which represents the difference in time between the first time and a second, later time at which a variation in fuel pressure within the source is detected.
