An active non-lethal infrasound system for denying all bird species access to critical areas, particularly in areas around aircraft and other high value systems. The system comprises a plurality of infrasound generators broadcasting continuous infrasonic signals to create a bird-free infrasound active zone within the perimeters of the protected critical area and an infrasound-free dead zones for birds being denied access to the critical areas. Further, an active infrasonic barrier is assembled within an exclusion area surrounding the bird-free infrasound active zone to dampen all low frequency sound waves emanating from the critical area and its perimeters. Wherever the situation allows, a wildlife sanctuary is preferably established further from the exclusion area to attract and protect birds, enforced by broadcasting infrasound signals that simulate natural sounds that attract species typical of the geographic location.

A method is provided for mitigation of aircraft bird strikes through the provision of conditions on the ground that totally prevents the formation of atmospheric thermals in the proximity of airports and airfields, whereby conflicts between soaring and migratory birds and aircrafts may be avoided. This is accomplished by modification of the topography of the field into a plurality of zones, as described herein and through construction of high albedo pavements, roads, artificial turfs and cool terrains.

Method and system for denying soaring and migratory birds access to critical areas of airports and aircrafts

A dishwashing system for cleaning soiled kitchenware, dishware and utensils is provided. The dishwashing system uses a combination of compressed air and blasting media to thoroughly remove grease and loose as well as hardened food particles from soiled surfaces, without hand tool scrubbing, manual rinsing, or use of soap, detergent, surfactants or other chemicals, whether in pre-soaking or cleaning. This heavy-duty dishwashing system accomplishes this thorough cleaning using no or a minuscule quantity of water. The overall energy requirements are low compared to existing systems due to elimination of water, reduction of the heating load and possible use of the heat of incineration. The dishwashing system may include a system for reclaiming used blasting media by separation from food residues. The dishwashing system is most appropriate for locations where freshwater is unavailable or costly, such as arid zones and aboard ships, and where disposal of gray water is impermissible.

An interactive multimedia geographic system is disclosed which incorporates an animated three-dimensional solid model of a world globe and utilizes video, sound, graphics, images and numerical presentations for perspective display of detailed maps of the world or portions of the maps. The system is capable of generating desired regional, global, political, and other maps detailing information on various geographic related features, such as demographic, cartographic, topographic, and geomagnetic features of the world. The system is coordinated with a physical globe which highlights the region of interest, and maintains a sense of perspective and relations among geographical regions as the display of the world model changes to reveal further details.

Information system for interactive access to geographic information

The invention is a detector for detection of concealed explosives, drugs and contraband using x-rays imaging and powder pattern techniques and ultrasonics. In case of inspection of carry-on baggage a combination of computer-aided x-ray transmission imaging and x-ray diffraction analysis is used to screen; confirm and localize threats. The x-ray transmission is used to segregate dense baggage and cargo which are inspected by x-ray backscatter imaging to identify suspicious objects. All suspicious objects are carefully analyzed by x-ray diffraction. In another embodiment a slow processing system uses diffraction for identification of threats and x-ray radiography for localization of the objects. In case of drugs concealed in compartments aboard marine vessels or air crafts a hand-held x-ray system is disclosed which can be used in three modes of operation: x-ray transmission, x-ray backscatter, or x-ray diffraction dependent on the architecture of the compartment. In case of buried mines an oscillating dual-energy x-ray backscatter imaging is used for antipersonnel mines and a combination of x-ray backscatter imaging and prompt gamma detectors is used for antivehicle and antiaircraft mines. Ultrasonic detectors are disclosed for detection of explosives on persons. Also, a tracking system based on bar-code identification system and a central computer is disclosed for baggage.

A computer-aided geographic system highlights a specified area of a map based on operator input. In a preferred embodiment, a voice recognition system receives the operator input in voice form and determines the area to be highlighted. In the preferred form, the map used is a globe, and computerized controls turn and tilt the globe in response to the voice command so that one or more spotlights inside the globe illuminate the area of interest. Information related to the geographic location selected may be retrieved and simultaneously displayed on a computer monitor, video screen, slide screen, and/or narrated by synthesized voice.

System and method for displaying geographical information

Radiation monitoring systems for crates and containers, and small volumes of foodstuff and tobacco, and whole body animal monitoring system for measuring the radiation contamination levels of containers, foodstuff, tobacco or animals and in the case of animals particularly, livestock utilized for meat consumption. The containers or animals are weighed, identified and then directed through a specially constructed shielded holding area, wherein multiple radiation detectors measure the radiation level for the containers or animal in the pen. A microprocessor analyzes the data information and provides a respective output for each container or animal which in turn is compared with predetermined standards and input information. The particular reading per container or each animal monitored actuates controls to segregate the containers or animals by those having acceptable and non-acceptable levels of radiation. The non-acceptable segregated containers or animals are specially held for evacuation and for disposal. In case of small volumes of grocery, a small scale radiation monitoring system provides the user indication of fitness of the product for human consumption.

Radiation monitoring system for containers, livestock, and foodstuff

Both a system and method are provided for purifying contaminated raw water into potable water by freezing. The system of the invention includes an ice grid having heat exchange surfaces that define cavities for producing ice solids having a surface to volume ratio no greater than 25 to 1, a refrigeration unit for indirectly cooling the heat exchange surfaces to at least the freezing point of the raw water, and an array of spray nozzles that continuously flows raw water over the cavities of the ice grid such that ice solids form from substantially pure water incrementally built up from the heat exchange surfaces of the grid to ultimately fill the grid cavities. The raw water is frozen slowly enough so that unfrozen contaminants expelled from the incrementally freezing ice are continuously washed away from the surface of the growing ice by a continuously raw water flow. After the freezing operation is completed, the resulting ice solids are rinsed with previously purified water to remove any contaminants lodged on their surfaces. The relatively low surface to volume ratio of the resulting ice solid results in a high percentage of pure water reclamation, as excessive melting of the pure water ice solids during the rinsing step is avoided.

A system and process for neutralizing unexploded ordinances and clearing explosive infested areas such that maneuvers can be both readily and confidently continued without significant delay is disclosed. The system clears such unexploded ordnances infested areas by initially spraying the explosive infested area with a cryogenic liquid to supercool the unexploded ordinances and reduce an output voltage of a detonator of the unexploded ordinances thereby rendering the unexploded ordinances inert, gathering the now unexploded ordinances and submerging the inert unexploded ordinances in a tank containing the same or similar cryogenic liquid so that the unexploded ordinances are maintained in a supercooled and inert state to allow for disposal. Alternatively, the neutralization of unexploded ordinance and clearing of explosive infested areas may be carried out by spraying the explosive infested area with liquefied methane to supercool the unexploded ordinance and reduce an output voltage of a detonator of the unexploded ordinances to render such ordinance inert, igniting the liquefied methane, deflagrating the unexploded ordinances at a temperature less than that required for detonation and subsequently removing the neutralized ordinances from the explosive infested area.

A wearout monitor for failure prognostics is a prognosis tool to predict incipient failure in rotating mechanical equipment. The wearout monitor provides maintenance management of a plant or process with information essential to planning preventive maintenance strategies. The monitor also assists in constructing a data base for development and implementation of policies for plant life extension, refurbishment, and modernization. The apparatus identifies systems of operation degradation of the whole system, as well as diagnosis of signs of commencing aging cycles of specific equipment, components or parts of equipment during operation. Data from the system is stored and also supplied to a central processing unit which includes an expert system, rule-based failure data bank, a predictor, a performance evaluator and a system identifier. The results of the predictions are supplied to management terminals or other indicators for subsequent use. Combination of prognostics and diagnostics of the symptoms of existing fault in mechanical equipment allows continuous on-line monitoring of systems to predict failures at early stages before leading to catastrophic breakdown and to assure safe and economic operation. By providing correlations between defect sizes and life expectancy of a rotating mechanical component, the monitor can provide the operator of the equipment with a warning time that indicates the time before loss of operation, thereby being critical to operation of transport systems wherein gearboxes can lead to loss of transmission power and subsequent loss of life particularly in helicopters.

The invention is a controller which provides continuous regulation of the output of a process or a plant as well as performing discrete control functions. The REFFTAC includes an adaptive direct digital controller (ADDC) as a primary expert controller and a fuzzy expert controller (FECD) as a backup controller. In case of an error or failure of the primary ADDC the control function is transferred via an interface system (INF) to the FEC, thus preventing any fault in the REFFTAC mission. The INF system is a simple fuzzy controller which includes means to verify the control action and a timer to assure proper control action. It also includes a simulator that performs a self diagnosis on both the ADDC and the FEC to assure fault tolerance. Also, the REFFTAC comprises learning expert units which stores correct control actions for direct application to save time and to provide a reference for the INF system.
