A mobile device in a moving vehicle initializes a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-Inertial Navigation System (INS) system while the vehicle is in-motion with the orientation of the mobile device with respect to a global reference frame. The mobile device uses gyroscope measurements made while the vehicle is turning to determine a gravity vector. The gravity vector and accelerometer measurements may be used to determine a forward vector for the mobile device. A north vector is determined using the GNSS measurements. After the GNSS-INS system is calibrated, the mobile device may be positioned with respect to the vehicle. The orientation of the mobile device, prior to repositioning, may be compared to a current orientation, determined while the vehicle is in motion, in order to determine whether the GNSS-INS system should be re-initialized.

Method and apparatus for in motion initialization of global navigation satellite system&#x2014;inertial navigation system

Aspects of the disclosure relate to initializing an inertial navigation system (INS) of a mobile device. Accelerometer bias of a plurality of accelerometers of the mobile device, and gyroscope bias of a plurality of gyroscopes of the mobile device, are determined. A first spatial relationship between a first frame of reference of the mobile device and a second frame of reference of a vehicle transporting the mobile device is determined. A second spatial relationship between the first frame of reference and a third frame of reference of a surface beneath the vehicle is determined. Each of the frames of reference are determined based on output of at least two of the GNSS receiver, the plurality of accelerometers, or the plurality of gyroscopes. The INS is provided with the accelerometer bias, the gyroscope bias, the first spatial relationship, and the second spatial relationship to initialize the INS.

Correction of motion sensor and global navigation satellite system data of a mobile device in a vehicle

Embodiments disclosed pertain to apparatuses, systems, and methods for dynamically characterizing a mobile station (MS) in a wireless network by determining the variability of measured Round Trip Time (RTT) parameter values, the variability of measured Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) parameter values and other determined characteristics and classifying the MS into at least one of a plurality of classification groups based on the values of at least one of the RTT variability, the RSSI variability, or the other determined characteristics. The classification groups associated with a mobile station may be used to selecting a positioning method to determine the position of the MS.

Dynamic characterization of mobile devices in network-based wireless positioning systems

Systems, apparatus and methods for determining a cyclic shift diversity (CSD) mode are presented. Examples use a channel impulse response (CIR) to determine a current CSD mode. Specifically, a channel impulse response from an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol, which forms CIR samples. The CIR samples are examined to find a local maxima. A current CSD mode may be selected based on the local maxima found in the CIR samples.

This disclosure involves methods and systems for a GNSS receiver to ascertain its environmental context and subsequently adjust the signal processing and search algorithms to provide improved acquisition. A rapid pre-scan is performed to determine the presence of relatively strong signals. If no satellites are found in the initial pre-scan, successively more sensitive searches are conducted until at least one satellite is acquired. The information from these pre-scans is used to predict the environmental context of the receiver and correspondingly tailor the parameters for the remaining search operations.

A method and apparatus for maintaining data accuracy in an access point (AP) location database including a plurality of stored location data are disclosed that can automatically update the AP location database meanwhile maintaining the data accuracy in the database. A mobile device transmits to a server a request for information regarding access points in a wireless network. The encoded access point identifiers include a reference identifier that has a number of groups of bits. The encoded access point identifiers also include encoding masks for respective access point identifiers, wherein a respective encoding mask identifies groups of bits for the respective access point identifier that are identical to corresponding groups of bits for the reference identifier. The encoded access point identifiers further include, for the respective access point identifiers, groups of bits that are not identical to the corresponding groups of bits for the reference identifier. A method and apparatus for qualifying a Satellite Positioning System (SPS) location determination. A method in accordance with the present invention comprises determining a constellation of satellites used in the location determination, making a measurement set based on signals received from the constellation of satellites, comparing the measurement set and the constellation of satellites used in the location determination to a predetermined threshold, and reporting the location determination only when the threshold is not exceeded. Such a method further optionally includes the threshold being user-selectable, the threshold being adjusted or disabled based on a pre-defined scheme, the threshold being adjusted in a sequential form based on a pre-defined scheme, and the measurement set being made in a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver.
