The invention relates to a water treatment plant comprising: means for supplying water for treatment, wherein said water has been coagulated previously, a flocculation-decantation device having means for dispensing at least one flocculant reagent, means for dispensing at least one ballast, means for extracting decantation sludge, means for discharging the treated water, means for separating said ballast contained in the ballasted sludge, and means for recycling the ballast that has been cleaned in this manner back into the flocculation-decantation device, characterised in that: said flocculation-decantation device has a single tank in the lower portion of which a stirring mechanism is arranged; wherein said single tank comprises slats in its upper portion; and said slats are separated from the stirring mechanism by a distance 'd' which is between approximately 0.5 metres and approximately 3 metres. The invention also relates to a method using said plant.

Water treatment plant having integrated ballasted flocculation and decantation, and a corresponding method

A water or wastewater treatment process that includes a dissolved air flotation process for removing suspended solids from influent water or mixed liquor. In one process, the dissolved air flotation process is carried out in the absence of adding a coagulant or a flocculant, but yet produces TSS removal efficiencies comparable to those achieved by conventional dissolved air flotation processes that employ a coagulant and a flocculant. In other processes, a coagulant and/or a flocculant is added directly to the mixing zone of a dissolved air flotation system or is added via a pressurized white water injection system. In another process, the use of a coagulant and a flocculant is useful in removing TSS and reducing the concentration of phosphorus in the water being treated.

Method for treating water by filtration on a bed of granular material in order to reduce its content in contaminants, said method comprising the steps for: making said water travel in transit in a reactor containing said bed in a upward flow at a speed that does not permit the fluidization of said bed but permits said material to migrate, as and when the filtration takes place, towards the lower part of said reactor, continuously removing a fouled granular material at the foot of the reactor, by means of a piping into which a gas is insufflated, said fouled granular material being constituted by granular material and contaminants adsorbed on said granular material; continuously or intermittently carrying out the physical cleansing of said fouled granular material thus removed, so as to obtain a cleansed granular material essentially rid of said contaminants; reinjecting the granular material thus cleansed into an upper part of said bed; characterized in that the granular material is an adsorbent granular material and in that it comprises: a continuous or intermittent step for the discharging, during the filtration, of a part of the fouled granular material removed at the foot of the reactor; and a continuous or intermittent step for the introduction into the reactor, during the filtration, of fresh granular material in a quantity sufficient to compensate for the part of granular material discharged.

A method of treating wastewater includes removing BOD and ammonium from the wastewater. The wastewater is directed into a tank where it is mixed with mixed liquor or activated sludge from an activated sludge wastewater treatment system. The mixture of wastewater and mixed liquor or activated sludge forms a mixed liquor stream. The mixed liquor stream is directed to a ballasted flocculation system where suspended solids is removed from the wastewater. This produces a clarified effluent that is directed to a zeolite tank. Clarified wastewater from the ballasted flocculation system is directed into the zeolite tank and mixed with zeolite. Zeolite is effective to remove ammonium from the wastewater. Thus, the process as a whole is effective in removing suspended solids, soluble BOD as a result of mixing the mixed liquor or activated sludge with the wastewater, and ammonium.

A method of treating water to reduce pollutants comprises mixing an adsorbent reagent with the water to form a water-adsorbant reagent mixture. Thereafter, subjecting the mixture to a liquid-solids separation process that produces treated water and sludge. The method further includes contacting the water or treated water with a living aquatic organism wherein the value of at least one property of the organism is correlated to the concentration of pollutants in the water.
